KGB Tuesday January 16

Once more a stunning morning warm and with a hint of a breeze, although almost unfathomable as to direction, saw 49 starters into the draw to compete in an alliance stableford two-scores-tocount format with the standard KGB bonus point for a “sandy” ,a par from a bunker as they were drawn in three three-balls and 10 four-balls.

Proving that being in a three-ball is not a disadvantage Derek Cooper, Derick van Harmelen and Alan Houghton were the first home on 92 (87+5) points to take first place. A close second on 91 points were Keith Buttemer, Keith Rugg, Len Bohnen and Dave Curran.

Tight competition, as per usual, for the Hamer & Sukkel saw this trophy shared by Mark Warren, John Abbot and Jimmy van Rensburg (77+5) alongside Ross Grainger, Steve Kennedy, Dave Kirk and Eugene Erasmus, both coveys on 82 points.

The substantial carryover two-club pool was captured, for his delighted covey, by Mike Stadler with the only birdie on a par three on the day, the 13th hole. Good scoring was the order of the day given conditions and John Abbott led the way with an individual 70 nett; Alan Houghton, John Abbot, Andy Manson and Ricky Barresi following with individual 69 netts; Derick van Harmelen, Neil Loundar, Matt Chadwick, Paul Fryer and Keith Buttemer improving with 68 netts; as player of the day was Zandile Jakavula with his individual 67 nett. Ricky Barresi deserved a mention for his fine individual 71 gross. Craig Harebottle also gained

Friday January 19

Another good field of 55 players were drawn in one three-ball and 13 four-balls to compete in an alliance stableford two-scores-tocount format with a bonus point for a “sandy”.

The field was tested by a fresh easterly breeze, by Port Alfred standards, that picked up pace as the morning progressed. Notwithstanding the testing conditions Andy Barnes, John Abbot, Michael Collins and Keith Rugg managed to tie for first place with Mark Warren, Donald McGarvie, John Abbott and Brian Reid both coveys finishing on 92 points.

Bringing relief to close competitors was the magnanimous grouping of Yvonne Hill, Peter Reed, Andy Manson and Eugene Erasmus who with 76 points took sole ownership of the Hamer & Sukkel at prize-giving.

Andy Stembridge and Maureen McGarvie both birdied the par three eighth; Donne Piquet birdied the par three sixth; but the two-club pool went to Andy Barnes’ covey for his birdie on the par three 11th.

Keith Rugg shot a fine individual 69 nett; Hein Barnard shot an even better individual 68 nett; clearing the stage for player of the day Andy Barnes, with his outstanding individual 67 nett.
