Temporary greens saw 31 players report to the draw to contest an alliance stableford two-scoresto-count, with a bonus point for a “sandy’, a par from a bunker in one three-ball and seven fourballs.

Thankful that the easterly breeze was below forecast velocity good scoring was the order of the day as Neil Loundar, Lawrence Schultz, Len Bohnen and Andy Barnes romped home in first place on a remarkable 98 points.

Trailing in their wake in second were Berny Loggenberg, Hein Barnard, John Muggeridge and Derek Cooper on 91 points. Peter Longhurst, Don Thomson and Russell Warren must have felt safe with 84 (79+5) points, as the first covey in, but that usually safe score was suffice to earn the Hamer &Sukkel at prize-giving. Eugene Erasmus birdied the par three eighth as Neil Loundar did likewise on the par three 11th and take the two-club pool to ensure that his covey took control of all financial spoils on offer on the day. Individual scoring was also outstanding as James Lobban, Keith Buttemer and Len Bohnen all shot individual 70 netts; Tony Halse, John Muggeridge and

Jenny Ralph improved with individual 69 netts; Andy Barnes shot what he thought was, and indeed it was, a superlative individual 64 nett; only for the field to be blown out of the water as John Ralph may have felt he had walked on water with his unbelievable individual 61 nett. Sadly, although more than 25% of the field had shot rounds worthy of mention, the temporary greens meant all scores were recorded as no returns for handicap purposes.

Friday January 26

Taking advantage that normal greens were back in play and the predicted light easterly wind, 41 players were drawn in three three-balls and eight four-balls to contest an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count format, with the standard bonus point available for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker. Revelling in the conditions Don Thomson, FanieSmit, Len Bohnen and Brian Reid posted a tidy 95 points to run out comfortable winners.

Daan Slabbert, Ian Storer and Lindy Krige (87+5) tied with Derek Cooper, James Lobban, Andy Stembridge and Eugene Erasmus both coveys finishing joint second on 92 points. Failing to win an uphill battle, Mike Krige, Peter Sinclair and Andy Barnes found no close competition as their 77 (72+5) points ensured ownership of the Hamer & Sukkel at prize-giving. Peter Reed, Lawrence Schultz and Pat Halse were the only players with birdies on par threes, all on the sixth, and being in different coveys the two-club pool carried over.

Good individual scoring was once more prevalent with Daan Slabbert, Derek Cooper and Derek Sinclair all shooting 70 netts; Pat Halse shooting a 69 nett; Andy Stembridge, Michael Collins and Don Thomson all shooting 67 netts; for the final spotlight to fall on FanieSmit with his outstanding 65 nett.
