BOWLSBANTER

PORT ALFRED

Following the tabs-in sponsored afternoon this past Saturday afternoon, Adrian Erasmus of Guardmed was invited to inform members of how to go about treating anyone who had perhaps collapsed on the bowling or croquet greens.

It was an interesting talk with many questions asked by those who attended. Many thanks to Elzabe Rodriguez for arranging the talk and to Adrian for spending the time with members.

Wharf Street Fruit and Veg sponsored the afternoon with the team of Jack Wiid, Jean Tyson and Gail Webster walking away with the vouchers. Jean, who lives in Makhanda, is the sister of Sheila Pearce and Gail.

On Thursday last week, the first round of the Timm and Moore Shield was played at the Kowie Bowling Club with the ladies’ team skipped by Elzabe peeling their game while Louise Vincent and her side went down by one shot.

Both this club’s men’s teams lost heavily to sides from Kenton and Kowie and will be looking to perform better in the next round.

Coming up is the Kenton Cansa Day on Thursday this week while the first round of the Peg and Horace Purdon is to be played on February 15.

In Gqeberha this past weekend, this club s team of Hein Strombeck, Jaco van’Rensburg, Theo Pretorius and Stuart McDougall competed in the EP fours final, after ending runners-up in the Eastern Areas fours.

Hein’s side lost their first game 2214, won their second 24-20 then on Sunday went down 21-16.

KOWIE

To bring some variety to the normal tabs-in competition on Tuesday afternoon, it was decided that the “Ou-Ballies” (over 70s) would take on the “Whippersnappers” of the club.

The games were tighter than expected and a lot of fun was had.

For the record, the afternoon was deemed a draw at six points each. The side that won their game with the highest shot difference was that of the “young” team of Judy Alexander, Margaret Stegmann and Sally Wormald who all went home with vouchers generously sponsored by Graze by the River.

Wednesday morning was hot and sultry, but this did not deter the regulars from fully enjoying their practice session. The Wednesday morning novice/golden oldie/practice sessions are included here because of the fun that this group has.

If you have played the game before and need to get the dust off your bowls and rust off your knees, there is an open invitation to all bowlers to come and join this group. We start at 10am and are normally home by 11.30am.

On Thursday, the first round of the Moore Shield between Kowie, Kenton, and Port Alfred Bowling clubs, was hosted at Kowie.

The Kowie men’s teams won both their games quite convincingly and are on four points with a shot difference of +58. Kenton is on two points with a shot difference of -19.

Port Alfred lost both their games and are on a shot difference of -39.

In the ladies’ Colleen Timm cup

competition, Kowie also won both their games and are on four points with a shot difference of +15. Port Alfred is on one point with a shot difference of -1. Kenton is on one point with a shot difference of -14. The next round of these competitions will be played in Kenton on April 25.

While our four top ladies and men’s teams were competing on the “A” green, Thursday afternoon also saw a very good turnout for the tabs competition which was played on the “C” green. The team that took the Niche sponsored vouchers was that of Pieter Stegmann and his team of Bugs Wilmot, Ruth Walker, and Dave Kirk, our visiting swallow from the UK.

After receiving his prize, Dave presented a wooden carving of a giraffe to Cyprian Guard, the losing skip. It was decided it would be a floating trophy at all tabs competitions for the losing skip from now on. Big heads up to Dave for the initiative.

Saturday afternoon’s tabs competition was played in hot and humid conditions. Bragging rights went to Denny Richardson and his team of Peter May, Louise Fleming, and Ann Gilfillan, who all went home with generous vouchers sponsored by The Grapevine. The Grapevine is a new sponsor at our club and are situated at the Postmasters Village. Thank you Kerri Castle.

Over the weekend, Kowie had two lady teams playing in the EP fours final at the Westview Bowling Club in Gqeberha. In the ladies’ section one, Jackie Kriel and her team of Megan Kriel, Yvonne Hill and Wendy Heny, lost their first game, won their second and narrowly lost their third game.

Judy Alexander’s team of Avice Steenkamp, Debbie Slattery, and Helise Hattingh narrowly lost their first game, but came back strongly, winning their second and third games and ended up as runners-up in section two. This earned them bronze medals.

For the record, the ladies’ final saw Di Ahrens’ team from Western Suburbs beat Petro Toerien’s team from Jeffreys Bay.

The men’s final was an all Westview Bowling Club affair, won by Curt Fischer’s team over Paul Spriggs’ side.
