PORT ALFRED MIXED KGB February 6

Overcast conditions, warm temperatures and a light south-westerly wind saw 40 almost sublime with a 67 nett; to clear the podium for joint players of the day Len Bohnen and James Lobban on 66 netts.

Nick Oosthuizen earned a special mention for his 80 gross to complete the day.

Friday February 9

Grey skies and a light westerly wind greeted 55 players drawn in one threeball and 13 four-balls to compete in an alliance stableford format with bonus points for “Sandys” and all players in a covey scoring three points or better on the same hole.

Ignoring the mizzle that was present over the first hour of play Nick Oosthuizen, Hein Barnard, Keith Buttemer and Jimmy van Rensburg were runaway winners on 98 points. Edging into second place on 94 points were Neil Loundar, Theresa Loundar, Gaby Hausmann and Zandile Jakavula.

The battle for Hamer & Sukkel brought memories reminiscent of the recent two years as two players with their names engraved on the trophy succeeded in contributing to the 84 points that saw Peter Sinclair, Jan Immelman, Steve Kennedy and John Abbott earn the trophy.

Yvonne Hill and Steve Kennedy both birdied the par three eighth hole while Michael Collins, Craig Harebottle and Greg Thomas all birdied the par three 6th hole. The players with the birdies were in separate coveys and the two-club pool carried over.

A day of good individual scoring was reflected in Derek Cooper, Hein Barnard, Michael Collins and Chris Pearce shooting 70 netts; Paul Fryer, Brian Reid and James Weisters shooting 69 netts; Quentin Fick shooting a 68 nett; Craig Harebottle shooting a 67 nett; Keith Buttemer and John Abbot shooting 66 netts; and player of the day Lawrence Schultz shooting a 65 nett. Craig Harebottle earned a special mention for his superb 77 gross.
