BOWLSBANTER

PORT ALFRED

Those who played in the Eastern Areas mixed pairs in Makhanda at the Albany Bowling Club this past weekend were greeted with warm, windless weather and lightning fast greens.

Four teams from this club participated, with Stuart McDougall and Louise Vincent winning their section after winning two and losing one.

Of the other three, Hein Strombeck and wife, Ilse, came within a whisker of also winning their section. Hein and Ilse lost their first game then won and peeled their final game. One more shot would have seen them through.

Things did not go too well for Jaco van Rensburg and wife, Joanne, as well as this scribe and his wife Mary, who both won one game but lost two.

All section winners return to Makhanda this coming weekend.

Wednesday saw the first round of this club’s mixed drawn pairs with many bowlers having entered. When the draw was done and as things turned out, Hein was drawn to play with Jaco’s wife, Joanne, while Jaco was paired with Hein’s wife, Ilse. The second round will be played on February 28.

The Peg and Horace Purdon was held at Kenton last Thursday with Julie Sluziuk’s team winning and Joan Jacobs’ side losing while Jaco’s side won with Boela Burger’s side losing by one shot.

In closing, many, many thanks to all those businesses who have sponsored our tabs-in afternoons.

KOWIE

With the night bowls competition starting tomorrow [Friday] evening, the ground-keeping staff have been scurrying around to ensure that both flood-lit greens, (A and C) are ready for the upcoming action.

Tuesday’s tabs competition was well attended which made the prizes more difficult to attain.

The team that went home with the bragging rights and a generous voucher from “Burksies” was Bryan Burger, Helise Hattingh and Dave Johnson.

Wednesday morning’s novice/golden oldies/ practice session had a bumper attendance*

of 22 players. It was pleasing to see Delene Deenik back on the greens after an extended leave of absence. The club has missed you and little “Gogga” big time.

Thursday saw two men ’ s teams and two ladies’ teams traveling to Kenton for the first round of the Horace and Peg Purdon competition. Unfortunately, both our ladies and men’s teams were beaten in both their games. In the ladies’ competition, Kenton won both their games, with Port Alfred winning one and losing the other.

In the men’s competition, Kowie lost both their games, Kenton won both, and Port Alfred

won one and lost one. The second round will be played on June 6 at the same venue.

Thursday afternoon’s weather was perfect for bowling with the tabs competition being well attended. Judy Alexander, Peter May and John Abbot won.

Friday afternoon saw three rinks being occupied by a bunch of “bounce” players who were mostly members, honing their skills for the Eastern Areas mixed pairs competition in Makhanda over the weekend.

Despite 14 of our top bowlers playing in Makhanda, Saturday’s tabs in competition was still well attended. The deserved winners were Stan “Silver Fox” Long, Bugs Wilmot, Sheena Warren, and our UK “swallow”, Launa Kirk, who each went home with a Penny Farthings voucher.

Eastern Areas mixed pairs:

The competition which was hosted by the Albany Bowling Club, was divided into eight sections with four teams in each section. Each team played one game on Saturday and two on Sunday. The winners of each section will play a second round of games on February 24-25 at the same venue.

At the end of play on Sunday, the following were the results. Section 1: Stuart McDougall (PA), runners-up Clive Bartlett (Albany); Section 2: Gwen Bartlett (Albany), runners-up HeinStrombeck (PA); Section 3: Pieter Stegmann (Kowie), runners-up Sean Thomson (Albany); Section 4: Andrew Meyer (Kowie), runnersup Mario Agnew (Albany); Section 6: Jennie Emslie (GHT), runners-up Steve Minnaar (Kowie); Section 7: Bresby du Preez (Albany), runners-up Willie Basson (Kenton); Section 8: Edmund Burgess (Albany), runners-up Lennie Clark (Kowie).

The winners progressto the final playoffs in Albany next weekend.

KENTON

The Diaz Insurance Jackpot tabsin kicked off the week and it was the team skipped by Stompie Bellingham who raced away to take the prize.

On Thursday, KBC hosted Port Alfred Bowls Club and Kowie Bowls Club, to contest the first round of the Peg and Horace Purdon competition.

Two men’s teams and two ladies teams from our club fought it out, and emerged winners with Kenton 4 + 4 against Port Alfred’s 2+7 and Kowie on 0–11. This puts us at the top of the log after round one. The ladies’ teams did equally well with both Kenton teams emerging victorious.

And then came Friday … the inaugural KBC Seahorse Trips competition with 20 teams ready to do battle. Justin Louw holding his head and spurring on his team crossed the line first with 22+27, from Rodney Austin on 21+18 and dark horse Cecilia Immelman finishing strongly on 20+18 from the early leader Rob Bowker on 19+10. Justin and Cecelia shared most of the prize money.

Great also to see newcomers Hugh Collett, Richard Stevens and Amanda Serfontein trotting home to receive a bottle of red wine each to celebrate their first experience of competitive bowls.
