Talk of the Town

Ndlambe’s silent killers: a call to action

- Krila Gadu, former Station Hill resident

I write to community leaders and concerned citizens with a heavy heart and a sense of urgency, as our beloved Ndlambe faces a crisis that threatens the very fabric of our community. The future of our town hangs precariously in the balance, with death stalking our young people in Port Alfred and beyond.

This reality confronts us daily: families are being torn apart, parents are overwhelmed, and our youth are succumbing to violence and despair at an alarming rate. The tragic causes range from fatal stabbings to the devastating effects of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as suicide, predominantly among young men.

Virtually every individual in our community has been touched by these issues, either directly or through someone close to them. The townships of Ndlambe bear the brunt of this suffering, with ordinary citizens bearing witness to the harrowing consequences of these social ills on a daily basis.

Rape cases continue to shock our conscience, while the high dropout rates from schools and rampant child neglect paint a bleak picture of our collective failure to protect and nurture our most vulnerable members.

It is clear that we are grappling with symptoms of a deeply ailing community, where something has gone profoundly wrong. We must come together as a united front, harnessing our collective resources, expertise, and resolve to confront these challenges head-on.

I implore our leaders in Ndlambe to set aside their differences and join forces in a concerted effort to address this crisis. Now more than ever, we need collaboration across all sectors of society, including local government, law enforcement, education, healthcare, private security, religious institutions, social services and non-governmental organisations.

It is imperative that we leverage existing data systems to gain a comprehensive understanding of the root causes of these issues and develop a targeted, evidence-based approach to intervention and prevention. Only by working together can we hope to deliver sustainable and scalable solutions that will uplift and empower our community for generations to come.

This letter serves as a call to action, but it does not end here. I pledge to continue raising the alarm, to continue holding our leaders accountable, and to continue asking the difficult questions that demand answers.

Our youth deserve nothing less than our unwavering commitment to their well-being and their future.

In addition to the urgent need for individual action within our respective spheres of influence, I requesting for the formation of a dedicated task team comprised of representatives from all relevant social structures to address the multifaceted crisis gripping our community.

The task team will bring together key stakeholders. By convening regularly to share insights, co-ordinate interventions, and mobilise resources, the task team will ensure that our response is comprehensive, collaborative and effective.

Together, let us stand as beacons of hope in the face of adversity.

Let us be the catalysts for transformation and renewal in our beloved Ndlambe.
