PORT ALFRED

Despite the drizzle, it proved a wonderful afternoon of bowls for the novices playing for Port Alfred, Kowie and Kenton Bowling Clubs on Thursday last week at Kowie.

The results of play are as follows: Kowie A 13 Kenton A 14; Kowie B 14 Port Alfred A 16; Kowie C 22 Port Alfred C 12; Kowie D 13 Kenton D 15; Port Alfred D 24 Kenton C 8; Kenton B 20 Port Alfred B 18.

Kowie ended on 2+5, Kenton on 6+11 and Port Alfred on 4+6. Two more novice days are to be held one at Kenton and the other at Port Alfred.

On Wednesday the second round of this club’s mixed drawn pairs was played.

Then, this past Saturday, the Build It-sponsored tabs-in was held with Ron Orford, Bill Wragg and Yvonne Surtees walking away with the main prize while Brian McLean, Piet Boshoff and Cecil Kerfox were runners-up. Play was suspended due to lightning, with the outcome decided on the 11th end.

It proved a disappointing weekend for Stuart McDougall and Louise Vincent who competed in the Eastern Areas Mixed Pairs plat at the Albany Bowling Club.

They lost their first game to Kowie’s Pieter Stegman and their second to Albany’s TJ McLean, placing them out of the running.

On Saturday, March 9, Grumpy Enslin will be running a marker’s course, while the next day, Sunday, this club will host their annual GBS-sponsored day.

KOWIE

Playing in cool, overcast weather, Tuesday’s tabs competition and the gift voucher from Rosehill Spar, was won by Jonty Alexander, Wendy Heny, Wendy Counihan, and David Kirk.

Wednesday’s novice session was played in great spirit, with the golden oldies assisting the newbies.

Thursday afternoon saw Kowie hosting the first round of the Novice Intervention Competition, played between Kenton, Port Alfred, and Kowie. The Kowie novices battled a bit and only won one of their games.

Thursday also saw a number of our members braving the rainy conditions to play for the generously sponsored gift vouchers from Niche. The raindrenched winners of the day were Denny Richardson and his team of Avice Steenkamp, Des Bailes from Cape Town, and Mark Asperling.

Friday evening February 23 saw the first round of the Pick n Pay Kowie night league being played under floodlights on the “A” and “C” greens.

The team from Leach Pharmacy was declared winners of the A section. The winner of the B section was team Plumbrite.

The second round will be played this coming Friday

evening, kicking off at 5.30pm.

Saturday afternoon’s tabs competition was played in very overcast weather.

Unfortunately, after 14 ends, the competition was rightly called off by the president, due to the electrical storm.

Kowie had two teams in the second-round playoffs at the Eastern Areas mixed pairs competition played at the Albany Bowling Club in Makhanda over the weekend.

In the Saturday morning session, both Pieter Stegmann (section A) and Andrew Meyer’s teams (section B) won their first games and then went on to lose their second. This left both their sections open for a humdinger in the final rounds.

Sunday saw Pieter Stegmann losing to TJ McLean from Albany and Andrew Meyer winning against Gwen Bartlett from Albany.

After tightly contested knockout games, the all-Albany final was played between Edmund Burgess and Kay Brown v TJ McLean and Marlene Mitchener. After a very exciting match, Edmund and Kay were declared winners.

Lastly, a big thank you to Albany BC for hosting the championship, and to all the members who volunteered in making it a huge success.

KENTON

Wednesday was the Volo sponsored tabs-in competition.

The Freeme team did it again. Dave Freeme skipped, Colin’s Arms-were-Strong and Neville Emslie proved that you can still win while being president.

Have to wait until May 29 to find out who else might win.

Well done to you three and thanks to Volo for keeping the tradition going with your generous voucher.

On Wednesday evening, the club also hosted the EA AGM where Lydia, who has put in such* stirling service as the EA secretary for three years, was able to relinquish her duties.

Thursday it was on with the club colours and off to Kowie for our four teams who entered the Novice Intervention Trips and played against four teams from Kowie and four from Port Alfred Bowls Club.

And the scoreboard shows Kenton 6 -11; Port Alfred 4 +6; Kowie 2+5.

We won!

The rains came down in Africa (apologies Toto) and soaked all the players but did nothing to dampen the celebrations that matched the fun that was had on the greens.

Well done to our dozen upand-comings.

It bodes well for the future as it is not that often we return victorious from Kowie.

Friday bounce games and social bowls followed by the bring-and-braai and Saturday tabs-in made an even balance between competitive bowls and good old social fun.

So now for the ‘did you know’ question …

The first bowling green was put down at …

Answer: St George’s Park in 1882 in the then harbour town of Port Elizabeth.
