KGB GOLF Tuesday February 27

Rain over the past few days and the forecast of not much wind saw 40 entrants into the early morning draw as 10 four-balls set out in a light easterly wind to play an alliance stableford two-scores-tocount format with bonus points available for a “Portuguese”, three points or better on the same hole in a team, as well as the traditional “sandy”, a par from a bunker. Conditions were sublime, the wind shifting to a light westerly mid-morning, allowing John Abbott, Matt Chadwick, Heinz Czepluch and Keith Rugg to post a joint winning score of 93 points with Peter Andrew, Andy Manson, Jan Immelman and Dave Curran to edge out close competition. Seemingly in a different league the lack of wind did not favour Craig Harebottle, Neil Loundar, Derick van Harmelen and Paul Fryer as they tacked this way and that scrambling to the Hamer & Sukkel on 75 points.

Ricky Barresi and Tony Halse both birdied the par three eighth; only to see Matt Chadwick secure the two-club pool for his covey with his birdie on the par three sixth. Ricky Barresi and Steve Kennedy both shot individual 70 netts; Dave Curran improved with his individual 68 nett as Don Thomson and Tony Halse shared player of the day accolades with 67 netts. Ian Palmer with an individual 76 gross shared special mention with Ricky Barresi as he shot an individual 70 gross.

Friday March 1

Sunny and warm and a fresh easterly wind to encourage focus on each shot greeted the 48 players that were drawn in twelve four-balls to contest an alliance stableford one-score-to-count on the par fives, two-scores-to-count on the par fours and three-scoresto-count on the par threes. A bonus point was available for any “sandys”.

In a stampede for first place, four coveys shared the honours on 88 points. Mike Beaumont, Yvonne Hill, Michael Collins and Bruce Carlyon; Ian Palmer, Len Bohnen, Jimmy van Rensburg and Rick Hill; Tony Halse, Pat Halse, James Lobban and Russell Warren; and finally, DaanSlabbert, Ian Storer, Keith Buttemer and Launa Kirk led to an overflow on the podium. Possibly not enjoying the pressure of three in a team needing to deliver on the par threes in the testing conditions, Andy Barnes, Steve Kennedy, Quentin Hogge and John Dell on 78 points narrowly were sole custodians of the Hamer & Sukkel at prize giving.

Ian Palmer, Brian Shirley and Greg Thomas all birdied the par three eighth as Steve Kennedy with his birdie on par three 13th took the two-club pool to bring some consolation for his covey. Bruce Carlyon with an individual 70 nett; Steve Kennedy with an individual 68 nett; and player of the day, James Lobban, with an individual 67 nett, were all deservedly acknowledged. Ian Palmer with an individual 77 gross rounded off highlights.
