Vintage fun in Sunshine Coast style

Fun drive quiz encourages drivers to explore Port Alfred

- PIET MARAIS

If ever you want to really explore Port Alfred, keep your eyes and ears open for the next celebratory rally of the Albany Vintage and Classic Car Motor Club.

The club marked its 20th anniversary on Sunday with a “fun drive quiz 2024” starting from the Classic Car Museum in Hawkins Park and ending with a classic “bring and braai” in Kleinemonde.

The 20 teams of driver and navigator, celebrating the club’s 20th anniversary, left the museum at 11.30am and by 1.30pm, the fires were burning and the chops starting to sizzle while the prizes were handed out in front of the club hall of Kleinemonde. So how does a fun drive quiz work? The purpose of the run is for participants to complete a quiz, based on clues scattered at predetermined points on a mapped route.

You receive a set of instructions with the map, set your odometer, drive a

distance, look out for a landmark, and answer the question or clue at each

point. For example, at 1.4km question is: “Is justice served here?”

The answer: “The Port Alfred magistrate ’ s court.”

And so, you continue, get to know your village, and end up well versed about Port Alfred, enjoying your surroundings, and having vintage fun, courtesy of the club. Among the vintage cars on the fun quiz route were a Hillman 1937, Triumph TR 3 1957, Jaguar 420, 1968, Mercedes, SLC, 1978 and a Mercedes 380 SEC 1984.

It was the first time the club opened to the public. In contrast to club events, which encourage members to use their classic beauties, participants could use any type of motor vehicle.

“The club actually has its roots in Grahamstown (Makhanda) in the 1960s,” explained chair Dean Wallace. “It has approximately 30 full-time members, as well as country and associate members and operates a car museum at Hawkins industrial estate.

“The museum is open to the public on the last Saturday of each month.”

Trevor Welbourne won the first prize for the first fun drive quiz — two nights’ accommodation at Maylodge Country cottages in Hogsback, worth R3,000. Other sponsors included Spar Rosehill, Eighteen 26 on Wharf, Midas, iHire, the Pig & Whistle, Burksies, and Flash Harry.

The second prize went to Mike and Sue Soroczynsky and the third prize to Carel and Margaret Buchner.

At the end of the event, Wallace said in an interview with TOTT he was pleased with opening the doors to the people of Port Alfred and surrounds.

“All participants enjoyed their outing, and the club took pleasure in sharing their enthusiasm for old cars and their facilities with the public.”

The final clue or question on the map forward, is: “Will we experience this again?”

Wallace gave the good news answer: “Thanks to the enthusiastic reaction, the club intends to make it an annual event.”
