KGB GOLF Tuesday March 5

The forecast of westerly winds into the high 50km/h range chased a few away as 34 golfers reported to the early morning draw to contest an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count in two three-balls and seven four-balls with a bonus point available for a “sandy” ,a par from a bunker.

There was no disappointment in expectations, as the forecast was accurate, and although challenged by the extreme wind Greg Thomas, Bryan Robinson, Ricky Barresi and Don Thomson compiled 87 points to finish first. Mark Warren, Russell Warren, Dave Kirk and Neil Loundar were worthy second on 85 points.

With two thirds of the field not reaching the 80-point benchmark George Lake, Andy Stembridge and Eugene Erasmus (68+5) shared the Hamer & Sukkel with Mike Meeser, Tony Halse, Steve Kennedy and James Lobban on 73 points.

Ross Grainger birdied the par three eighth as Lawrence Schultz with his birdie on the par three 13th took the two-club spoils on offer for his covey.

Indicative of conditions, no individual nett scores were worthy of mention. Ricky Barresi with an individual 78 gross and Ian Palmer with an individual 77 gross were without question a class above the rest of the field at the conclusion of proceedings.

Friday March 8

The forecast of improved golfing conditions resulted in 48 players into the early morning draw to compete in 12 four-balls in an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count with bonus points available for a Portuguese (three points or better on the same hole), a Portuguese plus (all in the team with three points or better getting two additional points), and the standard KGB additional point of a “sandy” ,a par from a bunker.

Scoring was not as easy, as may have been expected as the north westerly wind strengthened but Donald McGarvie, Maureen McGarvie, Zandile Jakavula and Derek Sinclair posted 87 points to claim first place.

The chasing pack saw three coveys in second, as Heinz Czepluch, Hein Barnard, Ian Moncur and Pete Andrew along with Pat Halse, Tony Halse, Rick Hill and Mike Beaumont as well as Steve Kennedy, Len Bohnen, Mike Krige and Russell Warren all finished on 85 points.

Newcomer Wayne Harris, Don Thomson, Peter Sinclair and John Dell limped home with 77 points to leave no doubt as to the ownership of the Hamer & Sukkel at prize giving.

Hein Barnard, Mike Beaumont and Daan Slabbert all shot fine individual 70 netts as Brian Reid with his individual 69 nett was player of the day. Mike Meeser with a gross 78 and Ian Moncur with a gross 76 were acknowledged.
