PORT ALFRED

The GBS-sponsored day held on Sunday proved a huge success. Although only 14 teams entered, it proved a fun event with many bowlers wearing colourful outfits due to a prize being awarded to the most colourful team.

Hein and Ilse Strombeck, Louise Vincent and Gavin Dixon won the prize.

When it came to the bowls winners, it was the Kowie team of Andrew Meyer, Jacquis Moolman, Brendan Marais and Helise Hattingh who walked away with the first prize. The Kowie team, skipped by Pieter Stegman, finished second with Port Alfred’s Jack Wiid, third.

Of the other Port Alfred sides, Peter McCullam came sixth, Ron Orford ninth, Fred Stowe11th, Hein 12th and Jaco 13th.

The winners of the Raduesponsored afternoon were Jaco van Rensburg, Piet Skiet and Anna Strombeck while the Guido’ssponsored event was won by Boela Burger, Joanne van Rensburg, Beryl Barnard and Henry van den Oevre.

KOWIE

Tuesday’s Ocean Basketsponsored tabs competition was won by John Hubbard and his team of Avice Steenkamp and Dave Kirk.

Wednesday morning’s novice/ golden oldie/practice session has been well supported this year. It is pleasing to note that the winning team of Thursday’s tabs in competition, all “graduated” from these Wednesday morning sessions — Ruth Walker, “middlepipped” by Dave Johnson, with Barry Chapman as lead.

Thursday also saw the first rounds of the men’s Kowie v Kenton, and the ladies’ Bess Tweedie Cup, hosted by Kowie.

With home-ground advantage, all of the ladies’ teams were on fire, winning all three of their games. Kowie is leading by six points, with a +40 shot difference.

The four men’s teams also had

a good afternoon, winning three of their four games. Kowie has six points with a shot difference of +36, and Kenton is on two points with a shot difference of -36.

Friday evening was again a great evening of bowling for the 26 teams who participated in the Pick n Pay night league bowling tournament.

Kenny’s Sports team won section A. In section B, Kenny’s Quarts won. The overall winners for the night was the team from Kenny’s Sports with 10 points and a shot difference of +24.

The Kowie members who participated in the Port Alfred GBS Settlers Plate competition on Sunday, did very well. Andrew Meyer and his team of Jacques Moolman, Brendan Marais, and Helise Hattingh won top honours.

Second were Pieter Stegmann and his all Kowie team of Denny Richardson, Stan Long and Vonnie Hill. Third place was Jack Wiid’s team of Cyprian Guard, Ivor and Sandie Rule.

Kowie Bowling Club availed its facilities to the annual Pineapple Tournament cricketers who played at the hospital grounds for the week.

Lastly, we are proud of Justin Louw, our Kowie’s novice champion, who represented the EP men’s B team, in the*

interprovincial at Eden this past week. The EP men’s B team were the silver winners.

KENTON

Monday was to be the muchanticipated culmination of weeks of intense competition as the Kenton Bowls Business League teams squared off for the final battle to determine who would win the coveted trophy. But it was not to be, as more than 20mm of rain fell in an hour.

But the prize-giving was no damp squib as O’Neils wrested the crown from Bedfords.

From the smiles on the faces of the O’Neil’s team members Ian Jacobs, Steve Barwick, Trish Barwick and Belinda Banfield receiving the floating trophy (apt) from Tony Usher, the organiser from Diaz Insurance, they will be back to defend their title next year.

Wednesday was Spar day and

it was the Tony Phillips’ team who came out tops with a can-youbelieve-it 10 + 20, leaving the Levey team in second spot. Thanks to Spar for the sponsorship.

On Thursday, four men’s and three ladies teams were off to Kowie to play in the first round of the Kenton vs Kowie and Bes Tweedie competitions respectively, with only the team of Dave Wallace, Neville Emslie, and Simon Cox, skipped by Gerald Brown bringing home any of the spoils.

Friday was Funday and even more members turned out for the next round of the Mad Hatters competition, augmented by the return of the Dekkers and the Newbies, (no not the 1960s rockgroup). Much bowling and braaiing followed to make Friday bowls at KBC live up to its name.
