Cheers to the winning couple

-

What better way to get the wife’s approval for your beer drinking than helping her to win pints and pints of the stuff for you?

That’s the opportunity on offer at Wharf Street’s Good Times Street Fair on Friday March 29. With the street closed to vehicle traffic, the historic street becomes the venue of the wifecarrying race, an event in which couples compete to see who will win the wife’s weight in beer!

Ian Cook, who is the organiser, says the event is popular in many northern hemisphere countries, and there is even a world championship staged in Scandinavia every year.

The Wharf Street event will start at 3pm and is open to any adult couple. You do not have to carry your wife, or even anyone else’s wife, just so long as you are acquainted well enough to be together in a carry position for a minute or so.

You can even run with a stranger it beats internet dating, Cook said.

But this is just one of the many attractions of the street fair on that day. With Wharf Street becoming a pedestrian mall for the day, it will host a large craft market; a painting demonstration by the town’s award-winning artist, Bob McKenzie; a novel walk-the-plank competition, which offers some wonderful prizes, a live band playing outdoors, and dancing in the street after dark. And, of course, the Easter Bunny will make a number of special appearances throughout the day. The street fair promises to be fun for the whole family.

Couples are advised to enter the race ahead of the event, as entries will be limited.

Entry forms are available from the brewery on Wharf Street, or by calling 046-624-5705.
