KGB Tuesday 12h March

The forecast of westerly winds into the high 50km/h range once again chased many away, as 30 golfers reported to the early morning draw to contest an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count in 10 three-balls with a bonus point available for everyone in a covey scoring three points or better as well as a “sandy”, a par from a bunker.

Lulling many into a false sense of well being conditions were benign at tee off and the forecast wind struck a few holes later to scramble players minds and ensure scoring was difficult. Lawrence Schultz, Rick Hill and Peter Longhurst, not being sure of what a good score might be in the conditions, were pleasantly surprised that their 80 points gave them a deserved first place. A distance behind James Lobban, Wayne Harris and Heinz Czepluch shared second position with Brian Shirley, Zandile Jakavula and Hein Barnard on 78 points.

The Hamer & Sukkel searched for a home and finally rested itself on the table of Derick van Harmelen, Jimmy van Rensburg and George Lake, as their 67 points brought relief to a number of close contenders.

Mark Warren with his birdie on the par three sixth, and the only birdie on a par three, secured the two-club pool for his covey. Lawrence Shultz and Andy Manson both displayed golfing pedigree with individual 70 netts as Heinz Czepluch, returning with vengeance and a recent promise to shake the establishment, was player of the day with his individual 69 nett.

Friday March 15

Following the inclement weather earlier in the week 53 players reported to the draw to contest an alliance stableford two-scores-tocount in three three-balls and 11 four-balls, a “sandy”, a par from a bunker gaining a team an extra point.

Initially calm, but sunny, the easterly wind cooled conditions as Yvonne Hill, Rick Hill, Daan Slabbert and Ian Storer shared first place with Ricky Barresi, Matt Chadwick, Ellen Fisher and FanieSmit as both coveys finished on 90 points.

The Hamer & Sukkel remained in hiding in the run up to prize giving as the second last covey home comprising Mike Meeser, Mel Orik, Jimmy van Rensburg and David Groenewald went on a search to ensure that their 73 points was suitably recognised.

Keith Rugg and Daan Slabbert both birdied the par three eighth and with no other two-clubs recorded, the pool carried over.

Heinz Czepluch, continuing his recent good form, shot an individual 70 nett; Matt Chadwick was rewarded with an individual 69 nett; Peter Longhurst, with a burst of sunshine, shot an individual 68 nett; as player of the day Keith Rugg returned an excellent individual 66 nett.

Ian Moncur shot a sound 75 gross as Ricky Barresi, back in form, came home with a 71 gross to conclude proceedings.
