BOWLSBANTER

-

The mixed drawn pairs final between Hein Strombeck and Joanne van Rensburg and Jaco van Rensburg and Ilse Strombeck was staged last Thursday. It proved a tight clash with Hein and Joanne ending up the trophy winners.

Needing six shots to win on the last end, but lying five, Hein had to remove an opposition bowl for the win. There was clapping all round when playing the only winning shot available, Hein pulled off the perfect shot.

Three teams from this club participated in the Kowie Rivalry event this weekend. Hein Strombeck and his team of Stuart McDougall and Louise Vincent topped the leader board after three games of 15 ends on Saturday with Trevor Frost, Brian McLean and Sheila Pearce ninth and Jaco and Joanne van Rensburg and Piet Skiet lower down.

On Sunday, two games of 18 ends were played. At the end of the day, Hein lost both to end in fifth place. Trevor won both ending second, while Jaco won both, to lift his side off the bottom of the log.

This past Saturday saw the staging of the Build It-sponsored afternoon, where Peter Giblin,

Mary McLean and Fred Stowe emerged the winners with Peter McCallum, John Hodges and Anna Strombeck the runners-up.

Unfortunately, due to consistent drizzle last Wednesday, the playing of the Timm and Vroom Cup had to be called off with a new date now set for Wednesday March 27. A new date for rounds one and two of the club’s novice singles, also set for March 27, will be arranged.

This week Wednesday, will be the playing of the Les Clarke and Doris Ford at this club.

KOWIE

What an eventful week we had, ending with the annual Mixed Trips Rivalry.

Tuesday afternoon was a little quieter than usual. The pairs team of Denny Richardson and Ossie Harbrecht won a voucher sponsored by Penny Farthing.

The intermittent drizzle hampered most of the morning’s fun, but the winning novice team of Theo Kemp and Colleen Clarke went home with a voucher from Penny Farthing.

Thursday’s tabs competition was won by Pieter Stegmann, Mike Ryan and Rob Walker.

the end of play, the leaderboard showed that the Port Alfred team led by Hein Strömbeck won all three of their opening games with a huge shot difference. In close pursuit, also winning their three games, was the team of Mike Tomlinson from Kowie.

Fortunately, the rains subsided during the night, leaving the ground staff with an early start in prepping the greens for the last two rounds of competition, where 18 ends were to be played.

At the lunch break, as it is with five rounds of closely contested competitions, the leaderboard changed hands once again, leaving the last game of play to decide who would walk away with the generous prizes.

In fourth place was the family team of Andrew Meyer, his son Vaughan Meyer, and his daughter, Lauren Labuschagne from Kowie. In third place was the Kowie team of Pieter Stegmann, Stan Long, and Vonnie Hill. In second place was the experienced team from Port Alfred, Trevor Frost, Brian Mc Clean, and Sheila Pearce.

Congratulations to the Kowie team of Mike Tomlinson, Mike Ryan, and Margie Thomas who came out as the overall winners of the Rivalry Competition.

Other prize winners were the team from St. Francis, Graham Allison, Pam Stark and Eugene du Preez who won the ”friendship prize”. The lunchtime “Spider” competition was won by Jonty Alexander. Jill Reed, representing the charity “Loaves & Fishes,” thanked all the players for their generosity as R2,300 was collected during the fun event.

KENTON

The afternoon weather threw us many curve balls or should I call it wrong biases during the week gone by. Howling wind on Tuesday, rain (not that we are complaining) on Wednesday necessitated the postponement of the Diaz Jackpot. Morning play was possible and four rinks were kept busy with a variety of games played in the Club Championships.

The second Seahorse trips played on Friday was the highlight of the week. Two games of 10 ends each with each end won worth one point and four points to the winner of a game.

It must be the only time that you don’t want to see your skip’s name on the leader board as it means your team has to be one of the top three. At the end of the day, it was the ‘Freeme Team’ of Dave Freeme, Wendy Cloete and John Daly who took the first prize. Then close on their heels came the ‘Bowker Gang’. Pam skipping Campbell S-W and Sandie Rule to second place and Rob taking third place with Allan Marias and Arie van Esch.

The event drew 60 players on the day with prizes for the best ends, hilarious fines and the bring-and-braai bringing flavour to the proceedings.

As if all this action was not enough, KBC had teams playing in the Kowie Rivalry Competition over the weekend.
