PORT ALFRED

It proved a disappointing Wednesday for the Port Alfred men last Wednesday when the Les Clarke and Doris Ford event was staged at this club.

Playing against Kenton BC, all three men’s teams lost with just Peter Giblin and his team winning. Kenton walked away with 20 points with Port Alfred earning 10. However, the ladies of this club did well, also against Kenton, with both teams scoring 10 points.

With the Timm and Vroom Cup set for Wednesday March 13, being called off due to rain, it was rescheduled for Wednesday of this week at this club.

The marker’s course held by Graham (Grumpy) Enslin last week went off well and was well attended. Thanks Grumpy.

The Radue-sponsored bowls afternoon was held this past Saturday, with Boela Burger, Piet*

Skiet and Sheila Oearce walking away as winners with Jack Wiid, Mary McLean, Fred Stowe and Yvonne Surtees the runners-up.

There will be a lot of action all over Port Alfred over the Easter weekend with both this club’s bowls and croquet sections involved. Thanks to generous sponsorship via the Royal St Andrews Hotel, the bowls section will be holding a mixed drawn pairs competition on Saturday and it has been well supported. Enjoy.

Coming up after the Easter weekend will be the playing of this club’s novice and senior singles and the entry list is on the notice board. Don’t forget to enter your names. Lastly, keep Gail Webster in your thoughts and prayers who is in hospital in Gqeberha with a health issue. We all are missing you Gail.

KOWIE

Tuesday’s tabs was won by Andrew Meyer’s team of Lennie

Clark, Dave Kirk, and Theo Kemp, who went home with a voucher from Graze by the River.

There was a bumper turnout for the Wednesday morning novice session where a new recruit, Brenda Pringle, was welcomed into the fold.

Thursday was Human Rights Day, so it was decided to have a fun day of bowling, which started at 10am, where the 4-3-2-1 scoring format was applied.

The morning tabs saw the team of Andrew Meyer, Rob

Walker and Leanne Linde walking away with the bragging rights.

After play concluded, the members were all invited to stay on for a bring-and-braai. Needless to say, the club hadn’t been that rowdy at that time of day for ages.

The fifth round of the Friday nite bowls has been postponed to Wednesday April 3. We are one team short, so please encourage another group to enter!

Saturday saw a good turnout for the tabs competition. The team that was a shot or two better than the rest for the afternoon was that of Mike Ryan, Justin Louw and Dave Johnson. They all went home smiling with a voucher sponsored by Burksies.

KENTON

An unusual week perhaps, in the history of activities at KBC with games in the club championships being played most mornings and tabs-in only being played on Wednesday.

Why you might ask? Because the clubhouse had been tastefully [forgive the pun] transformed into a wine cellar that Bacchus himself would have been proud of, as KBC hosted part of the Kenton Wine Festival.

More about this later. Firstly, more about the successful sortie to Port Alfred for the next rounds of the Les Clarke and Doris Ford competition. It was all smiles this week as our ladies’ team in the Doris Ford won one and lost one with Patricia Grieg, Cecilia Immelman and Lydia Palmer ending victorious over Kowie with a +10 point shot profit. Team two lost by the same margin so the scores ended up at 10 points each.

Our four men’s teams under the guidance of Willie Basson, Dave West and Dave Freeme brought home the bacon, with team Wickus van Schalkwyk slipping a bit but the overall scores recorded a victory, with Kenton on 24 + 7 and Kowie 16 -7.

The Kenton Wine Festival has become one of the major attractions for visitors to Kenton and so too was the corner-tocorner competition ably run by our men’s captain, Kevin Sharp.

Given that the longest end that most of us mere mortals ever play is around 36m, the length required to feature in a corner-tocorner bowls contest, is a formidable 47m but when the money is down and the volume of the good-natured banter increases, (Kevin can vouch for that) skill and energy raised to the power of the effect of plentiful sips of a good chardonnay or pinotage, saw the friendly rivalry become keen indeed!

Some memorable contests were played and it was a successful event for the club and our visitors and thanks go to the club members who gave up their time to make it happen.
