KGB GOLF March 26
Despite forecasts of the possibility of inclement weather, 40 players arrived to allow the draw master to ensure that ten 4-balls were faced with an Alliance Stableford 1score-to-count on the par fives, 2scores-to-count on the par fours and 3-scores-to-count on the par threes to endear himself with the field.
Less than half an hour after the first players teed off, the hooter sounded from the clubhouse due to thunder overhead and the threat of lightning.
As a result, everyone retired to the clubhouse for an early breakfast.
Play was then resumed after an hour, and though an initial bout of light rain was challenging, Nick Oosthuizen, Bob Shaw, Tom Tagg and Russell Warren retained their focus to post a winning 88 points.
Neil Loundar, Keith Rugg, Tony Halse and James Lobban finished in second on 86 points.
Only one sensitive covey yielded to the initial dampness and did not finish their round and as result, by default, John Abbott, Matt Chadwick, Hein Barnard and Jan Immelman were not present as the Hamer & Sukkel resided at an empty table in acknowledgement of their departure.
Quentin Hogge and Andy Stembridge both birdied the par three 8th and as no other 2-clubs were recorded the pool carried over.
Bob Shaw, Paul Fryer and Tony Halse all shot fine individual 70 netts in testing conditions.
Ricky Barresi shot an individual 76 gross on his swansong and visitor Darron Burger came home with an individual 75 gross.
March 29
Good Friday saw 44 players enter the draw in eleven 4-balls and compete in an Alliance Stableford with 2-scores-to-count on the odd holes, and 3-scores-to-count on the even holes, with the standard bonus point available for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker.
The draw master had evidently had time on his hands in dreaming up another variation of an alliance competition and few had any idea of what the norm in terms of points scored should be.
The day turned out to be magnificent for golf and Tony Halse, Pat Halse, Mike Krige and Mike Beaumont took full advantage of the warm conditions and the light south easterly breeze as they posted a winning score of 110 points.
On their heels in second, with 109 points, were Lindy Krige, Andy Barnes, Andrew White and Derek Sinclair.
Possibly thinking they were safe from the lurking Hamer & Sukkel with their 97 points, Guy Cash, Donny Rose, Rick Hill and Peter Longhurst found that this was not enough to avoid ownership of the trophy at prize-giving.
Peter Andrew and James Lobban both birdied the par three 6th, while John Muggeridge and Pat Halse both birdied the par three 8th.
As all birdies were in separate coveys, the 2-club pool rolled over for a second time.
Generally individual scoring was good, reflecting the playing conditions.
Mike Krige and Mike Beaumont both shot 70 netts; James Lobban shot a 69 nett; Pat Halse shot a 68 nett; Peter Andrew and Neil Loundar shot 67 netts; with player of the day Bruce Carlyon coming in with a 66 nett.
