Talk of the Town

BOWLSBANTER

-

Lots of bowls played this week and lots of people in town for the holidays.

Mornings saw progress being made in the club championship games causing Rodney Austen to mutter, ‘When am I supposed to mow, or water, or fertilise, or polish, or perform the other mysteries necessary to make the greens stay green and true.”

Mike Palmer filled in admirably while he was away. The ‘B’ green is in superb condition after all the work

put in by our impressive greenkeeping staff. Well done to those who know these things.

Wednesday was the Volo Restaurant tabs-in competition and here it was Team Willie Basson on 10 + 15 shading Team DiGruneberg on 10 +11 with Team Rodney Austen on 10 + 8. Well done to them and enjoy the meal voucher at the Volo restaurant. Our thanks to Volo for your support of our game.

Then it was SEEFF Super Thursday or should I call it the ‘Return of the (Je) Di’ as it was Di and team who romped home with a 10 + 22 from Gerald Brown on 8 + 19 and Pam Bowker on 8 + 16. Simon Oliver was on hand to award the prize. Good to see you Simon and thanks for your support.

KOWIE

The week started with overnight* rains on Monday, so it was touch and go whether the greens would be dry enough to play tabs on Tuesday afternoon. Fortunately, the sun came out early, and by noon the greens were ready to be rolled and marked

The winners of the afternoon’s tabs and the Rosehill SPAR gift vouchers, were John Hubbard, Joann Brown, and Craig Gibson.

Wednesday’s Novice session was played in cool overcast weather and enjoyed by all. It was sad for some though, as it was Bon Voyage to Launa and Dave Kirk from the UK, who played their last game with us until their next extended visit to our shores.

Wednesday afternoon saw 4 mens and 2 ladies teams playing in the Timm and Vroom Cup competitions, hosted by Port Alfred. The Kowie men’s teams only managed to win 2 of their 4 games, ending on 4 points and a shot difference of -12. Port Alfred are on 4 points with a shot difference of +12.

The two lady teams from Kowie managed to win both their games in the Vroom Cup, resulting in Kowie winning 4 points, with a shot difference of +14. Both competitions are still in their early stages.

Thursday afternoon ’ s tabs competition and bragging rights went to Jonty Alexander and his team of Dave Tyrrell and Louise Fleming.

With a lot of our members spending time with their families over the Easter weekend, only a handful of members handed in their tabs on Saturday afternoon. The team that proved better than the others was that of Stan Long, Dave Tyrrell and Louise Fleming.

For the record, a couple of Kowie teams that played in the Easter Festival Sunshine Coast 2 Bowl Pairs Tournament, did very well.

Winners of the plate were Jonty Alexander and Justin Louw. Runners up PieterStegmann and Lenny Clark.

The overall prize winners of the competition was a team from Hogsback, with Stuart McDougall and Anna Strömbeck from Port Alfred taking second place.

Congratulations to all the competitors and a huge thank you to Port Alfred Bowling Club for hosting a splendid, well organised competition.
