KGB GOLF Tuesday April 16

After downpours the previous day, the air cleared, the sun shone, and the easterly wind welcomed 40 golfers drawn in 10 four-balls to contest an alliance stableford twoscores-to-count with bonus points available for a “Portuguese”, three points or better by a covey on the same hole, as well as a “sandy” ,a par from a bunker. Dovetailing sublimely, Steve Kennedy, Mike Stadler, visitor Greg Wood and Tom Tagg were winners on a well compiled 91 points.

On their heels around the course and in second, well ahead of the rest of the field, Craig Harebottle, Don Thomson, Brian Shirley and Andy Stembridge came in with 88 points.

In a shootout in the nether regions, as 60% of the teams shot in the 70s, James Lobban, Wayne Harris, Len Bohnen and Keith Rugg claimed the Hamer & Sukkel at prize giving for their 73 points. No birdies were recorded on the par threes and the twoclub carried over. Visitor Scott Jackson shot a fine individual 76 gross, as Hein Barnard and Eugene Erasmus shared player of the day honours on the podium with individual 70 netts.

Friday April 19

Initially grey skies and just a hint of an easterly wind saw 41 players drawn in three three-balls and eight four-balls to contest an alliance stableford two-scores-tocount with the standard bonus point available for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker.

Ideal weather conditions as the sun arrived mid-morning led to the expectation of exceptional scores but local golfers evidently required more testing conditions as Daan Slabbert, Ian Storer, Andy Stembridge and James Weisters found that their 86 points was enough to earn first place. In a close second Lawrence Schultz, Wayne Harris, Yvonne Hill and Paul Fryer were second on 85 points.

Nick Oosthuizen, Mike Beaumont and John Abbot were possibly searching for reinforcements as they scraped home on 76 (71+5) points to covet the Hamer & Sukkel, to the delight of a three-ball on their heels, at prize giving.

Mark Warren birdied the par three eighth as Dave Curran and Tom Tagg both birdied the par three sixth. Dave and Tom playing in separate coveys meant the two-club pool carried over once more. Mark Warren and Bruce Carlyon shot an individual 70 netts as Dave Curran and Tom Tagg shared individual honours with 69 netts.
