Talk of the Town

BOWLSBANTER

-

PORT ALFRED

It will be a dull week for this club’s bowlers, as our croquet players will be staging a week long tournament which has attracted 50 players.

As a result, all four greens will be used, so no bowls for the week.

To the croquet players: Have a great tournament.

However there will be some relief when the next round of the Moore Shield and Timm Cup gets played at Kenton this Thursday.

Played recently was the second round of the men’s and ladies’ senior singles with Phil Taylor beating Piet Skiet and Nick Oosthuizen beating Mike Connellan. Phil and Nick will meet in the final. Among the ladies’, Joanne Brown beat Gina Thomson while Jackie Kriel managed a win over Anna Strombeck leading to Joanne and Jackie contesting the final.

The Kekkel en Kraai-sponsored afternoon was won by Joan Jacobs, Paul Vincent and Mike Pfotenhauer. I t’s been good to see Mike back at the club following a health scare. Welcome back.

This past Saturday, the Build Itsponsored afternoon was won by

Trevor Frost, Jaco van Rensburg and Sheila Pearce. The runners-up were Julie Sluziuk, Nick Oosthuizen and Arthur Beresford.

The fun darts evening where bowlers play against croquet players is set for Friday May 3 starting at 6.30pm. Music will be provided for those who want to dance while waiting to play or have finished playing.

KOWIE

With the weather playing its part for our bowling fraternity, another great week was enjoyed by our members on our beautifully prepared greens.

Tuesday afternoon’s bragging rights for the tabs competition went to Judy Alexander and her team of Debbie Slattery and Ann Gilfillan.

Wednesday morning’s novice session was well attended and enjoyed by all, with adherence to etiquette being the buzz word.

Tabs in for a Thursday afternoon was surprisingly quiet, and was won by Cyprian Guard and Patrick Smith.

Kowie Nite League

After nine evenings filled with thrilling bowls, great camaraderie, and fierce competition, Friday*

evening saw the conclusion of yet another amazing season.

Cup Final

The Nite League Cup was won by Foresthill Construction with 74 points and a shot difference of +69. In second place was the team from A1 Pre-owned Auto on 69 points +76. In third spot was the team from Kenny's Sports on 65 points +54.

Plate Final

The plate was won bythe Air School team with 25 points and a shot difference of +19. Second place winners was Buco on 23 points + 22. Third spot went to Port Alfred High School on 21 points + 23.

After prize-giving, event coordinator Cyprian Guard thanked all the teams who participated and contributed to the success of the Nite Bowls League. He said that

the dedication and sportsmanship shown during the entire tournament made each night memorable. He also thanked the ground-keeping staff for the superb greens in trying times during the entire tournament.

Also, a special shout-out went out to the incredible team of volunteers whose hard work behind the scenes ensured smooth operations where no event this size could be successful, week after week, without all the help from the tireless club members. (Too many to mention). He concluded by thanking the main sponsors, Pick n Pay Port Alfred, for their unwavering sponsorship and support by helping to make this event so successful.

Finally, the good news is that the new season starts at the beginning of October, so we will

see you all later on in the year.

Saturday afternoon was a beautiful day for bowling, where the winning team of Peter May, Debbie Slattery and Rob Walker all went home with vouchers sponsored by Burksies.

Well done to Pieter Stegmann and Jonty Alexander’s teams that represented our Kowie Bowling Club at the 2024 All Cape tournament this past week, with Pieter’s team narrowly missing out in playing in the cup playoffs.

Jonty Alexander’s team of Andrew Meyer, Jacques Krige and Lenny Clark ended the tournament winning bronze position in the bowl competition.

Jonty was 18-13 up on the last end and went 5 down, so the game was peeled. They had to play a sudden death end, which he lost, thus the bronze medal and

not the silver. KENTON

On Wednesday Rodney Austin, (the lad with the distinctive blue bowls), Alan Marais and Dave Wallace cruised to victory in the Dias Jackpot tabs in.

On Seeff Super Thursday, I thought Pam Bowker’s 10 + 10 would be enough until Willie Basson, Mark Janse van Rensburg and Ken Bern carried all before them with a 10 + 24.

On Friday, the Seahorses again came to shore as 60 bowlers battled it out in the trips. Two games of 10 ends each saw Stompie Bellingan, Corne Smit and Sandie Rule with a 23 +22 edging Peter Levey, Neels Heunis and Cherryll Ridden on 19 + 10 and Di Grunenberg, Liz (ladies first) and Mark Janse van Rensburg on 19 + 6.

In addition to best overall and best ends, there was a new prize won by Mo Marsden, Elma Britz and Ian Smith for coming somewhere … I’m not sure where … but thanks to Hein Strombeck, who has opened a biltong and dried fruit store where Pandora’s used to be, called Time 4.

The novice singles championships was played over Saturday and Sunday.

It was a high quality competition that showed the healthy amount of younger talent at our club.
