Mthembu on his way out at Chiefs

- Mzwakhe Ngwenya

Sphelele Mthembu is likely to quit Kaizer Chiefs.

The former Platinum Stars striker signed for Amakhosi in the close-season and is yet to open his goalscoring account.

Apart from that, Mthembu has yet to put on an inspiring display for the Naturena-based club.

Sources close to the player and club say his days are numbered.

“Yes, it is true,” said the source. “Mthembu has not lived up to expectations and as things stand, he is going.”

Chiefs are on top of the PSL standings and yet the goals have been coming from the midfield rather than the strikers.

Kingston Nkhatha has one league goal, with most of their goals coming from Junaid Mashamaite, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, George Lebese and Mandla Masango.

This scenario is one which prompted the Chiefs management to sign Chippa United striker David Zulu (right) who will join the team in January.

Mthembu is not the only striker struggling for goals with also seasoned campaigners such as Bernard Parker and Nkhatha battling. But it will be the former Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows and Stars player who will be sold. Speculation is also rife that Amakhosi are after AmaZulu striker Bongani Ndulula.

Ndulula’s agent Tim Sukazi has been extensively quoted as saying the player may leave the country for Belgium.

With Chiefs set to play in next year’s Caf Champions League, it is no surprise they are linked with so many players.

Another player linked with Stuart Baxter’s side is Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Anthony Laffor.

It is believed the Liberian and Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane’s relationship is not at its best, resulting in the player being frozen out of the club’s starting line-up.

Now Chiefs are said to be after the lanky player who can play on the wing or as a striker. Chiefs plan to sign him on a pre-contract in January as his deal with the Chloorkop-based side expires at the end of the season.
