Vulgar, obnoxious waste of time

-

Leon van Nierop

Let’s be clear about one thing. If you’ve had a gruelling week, form part of a group referring to each other as “boet” on a pub-crawl, and need to pass the time between rounds, this is the perfect movie. It is extremely vulgar, over the top, at times plain stupid and as obnoxious as a 14-year old schoolboy with a can of spray paint at a public wall.

This culture of severe vulgarity and belittling of the audience and characters may have reached its peak with Bad Neighbours, Ted and now this attempt at comedy. Directors like Ken Scott try to push the envelope to breaking point by entering a netherworld of masturbation fantasy like cinema has never seen before.

With the prophet of vulgarity, Vince Vaughn, at the helm, the film has no other path to follow but deplorable banality. So schoolboys and students over 16 might find it devastatingly funny (until they experience the real brutality of adult life), while males who are still teenagers at heart might also convulse with laughter. But if you are in the mood for a cool comedy, this is not for you.

Unfinished Business

Cast: Vince Vaughan, Tom Wilkinson, Dave Franco Director: Ken Scott Classification: 16LND

An obnoxious, small-business owner (Vince Vaughan) starts his own company with two seemingly incompetent losers, played by Tom Wilkinson and Dave Franco. The latter is the most successful if abrasive part of this trio.

With his goofy smile, his creepy belief in himself and his daft one-liners, he may be the only reason many stay in their seats.

There is a scene in a public bathroom which provides eye candy for the voyeur, but is forced, eminently unwatchable and embarrassing. The problem is this scene is just another in a neverending exercise in abusive, adolescent humour.

Teenagers may love this movie, but for me (and the others around me, judging from the embarrassed sighs) a root canal treatment without anaesthetic would be preferable.
