Chiefs legend: Do not despair

TAU: IT’S JUST A PHASE, KOMPHELA WILL GET IT RIGHT

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Former captain calls on supporters to have faith.

All is not lost for Kaizer Chiefs as far as former captain Jimmy Tau is concerned. Tau said the slump the team is going through is temporary and should be seen as a test of Steve Komphela and his team’s mettle.

“The character of a champion is defined by how you come back during the trying times and I think they know what’s at stake,” said Tau.

Amakhosi have had the worst start possible to the season – losing their first Absa Premiership match to Bidvest Wits and then getting knocked out of the MTN8 by Cape Town City, all in a week.

But Tau is adamant it is just a phase that any team is bound to go through at some point.

“It happens in football. It is a phase the team is going through. It is continuing from last season but it is a matter of time before they get it right,” said the 36-yearold who hung up his boots two years ago and became a football analyst for SuperSport TV.

Tau believes Amakhosi’s fortunes are in the right hands with Komphela who has come under fire from the team’s fans, many of whom believe he has failed to change the team’s course.

Komphela was slammed after he omitted all of the nine new signings the side had made in their opening game against Wits, but Tau said the coach probably knows better.

“I am not in the Chiefs technical team so I don’t know what happens in training, I can only comment on what I see on the field.

“I don’t doubt Komphela’s quality as a coach. He understands pressure is part of the job. Every Chiefs coach will have the pressure whether they are doing well or not.

“When you are doing well the pressure is on you to keep it going. It’s a well-known Chiefs tradition to be successful.”

When you are doing well the pressure will be on you to keep it going.
