Brockie backs the new boys
On paper, Stuart Baxter’s SuperSport United look convincing enough to be counted as one of the teams to be tipped as strong contenders for the Absa Premiership title this season, as the likes of seasoned players in Tefu Mashamaite (above), Morgan Gould and Reneilwe Letsholonyane, have all found a home at Matsatsantsa a Pitori.
The club’s targetman, Jeremy Brockie, is confident the experience of the veterans will help steer the team in the right direction.
“They bring a lot to the squad. You cannot buy experience, and to have those players in the team is very good, not only for players like myself, but for the youngsters who are coming through the ranks as well.
“Yeye (Letsholonyane) is one player who I have always watched since my arrival in South Africa and admired what he does on the pitch … and it is great to have him on my side rather than having to mark him,” said the 28-year-old striker.
United completed the signing of last season’s PSL Young Playerof-the-Season Aubrey Modiba, on deadline day (Wednesday), and SuperSport CEO Stanley Matthews welcomed him by saying they are “looking forward to polishing him into a global star”.
Nonetheless, Brockie is particularly excited about the acquisition of Thabo Mnyamane, and is looking to forging a good partnership with the former University of Pretoria winger.
“He is a very exciting addition to the squad, he is one of those players who are predominantly left-footed but he can sort of take on defenders coming from the inside and going outside. He is a very good addition to the squad and he will improve with the more games and starts he gets.
“He will get to know the players and the style and how we operate – he is another exciting player who I am looking forward to working with and I’m sure I will see the best of him this season.”
