Let’s put safety first on our roads

-

As South Africans, we lose lives daily on our roads as the result of lawlessness and egotism. Drivers deliberately break the rules and end up causing unnecessary deaths. Most generally, the misuse of yellow lanes during the so-called rush hours as done by taxi drivers. Not forgetting overloaded transports for schoolkids and the use of cell phones while driving. Lately, I even saw a lady putting on a make-up while driving at what to me seemed to be a high speed.

Where are we going as a nation? Remember, your safety is my safety and should be my concern. This is intolerable and should be dealt with in a very harsh way.

Our law officers seem not to play a role in eradicating this madness and as a result, innocent lives are lost. Traffic officers are using this to enrich themselves by taking bribes instead of thinking about the danger that it poses to innocent road users.

Let’s all take responsibility and say no to this dangerous practice to save lives and promote safety.

I found it disturbing to find ambulances and other emergency response vehicles delayed just because an irresponsible driver just decided to drive on shoulder of the road. We can spare lives if we all play a role and stop making fun out of useless dangerous practices.

This is like a cancer that robs the country a lot and sucks the government purse dry by paying lot of money in the form of compensation to those in the middle of a calamity. Percy Ngwato, Pretoria
