League could be too close to call
WITS BOSS: I HAVE WON IT ON GOAL DIFFERENCE BEFORE
Hunt’s men have a mountain to climb against Sundowns.
Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says this season’s Absa Premiership league race is so highly contested it could easily be decided by goal difference at the end following their 5-0 hammering of Baroka FC at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday.
This was Wits’ second big win this year, having won by the same scoreline against Ajax Cape Town taking their goal tally to 30 in the league.
The Clever Boys currently lead the standings with 34 points, just one point ahead of second-placed Kaizer Chiefs followed by SuperSport United and Cape Town City who are tied on 32 points, while Mamelodi Sundowns are on 29 points.
“We had to really close the goal difference gap because that is really what it is about. I have won the league on goal difference before.
“There are four to five teams that can win the league, it will be close at the end so consistency and using the squad well will be key,” said the Wits coach.
With the result clearly indicating Wits outshone the Limpopo outfit on the night, Hunt was not really impressed with the performance of his team.
“I don’t think we played particularly as well as we can play. I thought we were very deep and we played too much on the back foot. We could have played better and created more chances. But again, when you play three games a week the result is important.”
“We have only played 16 games now, so there is still a long way to go.
“There is a lot to play for, the second round just started plus everything else that is going to come with it, like the Champions League and everything else,” he added.
With the team’s midweek performance not really what Hunt expects from his players, he will certainly be hoping his charges impress him when they face Masandawana in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash at Loftus Versfeld tomorrow.
