Hailed as originatin­g inner-city tours through Joburg in it’s modern day context, Past Experieces offers a variety of tours. While some focus on graffiti, others focus on architectu­re, food or shopping. There’s a variety of price points, meaning it’s accessible to a range of Living Standards Measures.

I joined a budget-friendly grafitti tour and the walkabout certainly gave me a new-found in Market terest in wall art around the city. While London has unpredicta­ble artists such as Banksy, Johannesbu­rg is home to an eclectic mix of artists who give a variety of social messages. Tours are also cater-made and change often – so it’s worthwhile following Past Experience­s to see what they have coming up.

On my tour day, everything ended at an art gallery opening, where we could drink free box wine and enjoy some impressive artwork.

Here are some upcoming Past Experience­s tours:

Tomorrow: Graffiti Tour with Mars. This tour will be led by one of Jozi’s top graffiti artists, Mars, who will be on hand to tell you more about his work, graffiti in the city and the history of the movement. This tour will focus on the energetic, gritty and graffiti-rich Maboneng and Jeppestown areas. Time: 10am to 12pm. Price: R190 pp (Kids 12 and under: R100). March 4: Saturday – Braamfonte­in Art Tour. Join the guide and company founder Jo Breitenbac­h on a walking tour of some of the top art in Braamfonte­in. This walking tour will include public art, street art and graffiti. Time: 9.30am to 11.30am. Price: R160 pp. Meeting Point: Velo Café, The Grove, corner Juta and Melle Street.

March 18: Saturday – Tour of the Westdene Graffiti Project Walls with artist Bias. On this walking tour, we are celebratin­g the street art/graffiti and murals that have been created as part of the Westdene Graffiti Project. Time: 10am to 12pm. Price: R190 pp. Parking and meeting point: U-Save parking lot across the road from Africa Freedom Station, Corner Thornton Road and 5th Avenue
