From old to modern
Interior decorator Joanne Roelofsz transforms an outdated pine storage unit into a stylish cabinet WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Screwdriver 60-grit sandpaper 100-grit sandpaper Sponge rollers universal primer wide paintbrushes PVA paint in three colours An accent colour for the shelves and a darker and lighter shade of the colour of your choice for the exterior Plascon Glazecoat matt New cupboard handles and drawer pulls of your choice.
PREPARING AND PAINTING THE CUPBOARD:
1. Unscrewknobs, and handles remove and the storage baskets. 2. Sand down the entire unit using 60-grit sandpaper. 3. Sand down for a second time using 100-grit sand paper. Remove any dust by wiping down with a damp cloth. 4. Using a sponge roller
apply a coat of universal primer.
5. Leave to dry completely. 6. Using a wide paintbrush,
paint the shelves the colour of your choice (Joanne used Plascon’s Banffspring B25-4). Paint up to three coats.
FOR THE CUPBOARD DOORS AND EXTERIOR DISTRESSED EFFECT:

2. Using a wide paintbrush, apply a generous coat of the darker colour of your choice to the exterior of the cupboard and the doors (Joanne used Plascon’s Natural E16-4). 3. Leave to dry. 4. Paint the lighter shade over the darker using a sponge roller (Joanne used Plascon’s Mayor E16-3).
5. Before the coat dries, take a clean dry paintbrush and dry brush the surface to reveal the darker paint beneath, removing the excess paint from the paintbrush as you progress.
6. Sand lightly with 100-grit sandpaper to achieve the distressed look. Depending on how worn you wish the item to look, steps 5 and 6 can be repeated. 7. Leave to dry thoroughly before sealing with the matt
glaze coat.
8. A ach knobs to the cupboard doors and replace the drawer pulls with handles of your choice.
