Light out at Loftus
MEETING: SUNDOWNS, CHIPPA UNITED FAIL TO REACH AGREEMENT Onus on league to decide when the game will resume after power failure.
The Absa Premiership match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa was called off last night as the Loftus Versfeld Stadium experienced power failure after 41 minutes.
The match commissioner, PauHe lo Marques decided to call-off the match, and as a result, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and the two clubs held a meeting chaired by Marques, to establish a way forward.
PSL communication officer Luxolo September revealed that the clubs failed to reach an agreement on when the match will be resumed.
“We were informed that it was going to take a minimum of two hours to get the power back up, so the two teams decided that they will discontinue the match ... the second phase was to consult the two clubs on the future date on when the game can be continued,” said September.
“So the match will basically resume in the 41st minute, everything will remain the same as if it was one match. When we concluded the sessions with the two clubs, there was unfortunately no agreement, but according to rule 14.17 of the PSL rulebook, it states that the onus will be on the league to decide in an event whereby the two members cannot agree on a date.”
When asked what led to the clubs not seeing eye-to-eye as they both have PSL games to play this Friday, September said he cannot speak on behalf of the clubs, but can only interpret the rules.
further apologized to the supporters who came to the stadium in numbers, and to those who were watching the game on TV.
“We apologise to the supporters, we want them to watch football, I honestly don’t know what caused the power failure. It was a beautiful game, a great game of football that we were watching.”
