LOCK, STOCK AND WINE BARREL

-

It’s exciting when Italian-inspired wines are produced and bottled right here in South Africa. Steenberg just released their 17th Nebbiolo vintage, the 2014 Steenberg Nebbiolo crafted from the Nebbiolo vineyard which was planted in 1994. The wine combines grapes from this vineyard, with a small portion from one of the younger blocks.

The result is an elegant wine with a smack of Italy, coupled with a nose of fynbos and dried herbs. On the palate Nebbiolo leans towards berries, with pops of sour cherries and raspberries.

Cellar master JD Pretorius is adamant that you decant the wine. He’s not wrong – the tart qualities of the Nebbiolo needs a little extra air to truly get its heart pounding.

It also means the wine pairs well with Mediterranean and salty dishes – making it the perfect drink for an intimate or special dinner. The wine retails for R255 at the cellar door.

If you’re in the Franschhoek area next month, also mark May 13 in your diary for the very special Winemaker’s Table dinner at Plaisir de Merle. Guests will be treated to a delicious feast, prepared by well-known Kokkedoor judge Chef Nic van Wyk, paired with wines selected by Plaisir de Merle Cellar Master Niel Bester.

The dinner will be served at the historic Manor House. The interior of the Manor House features an elegant and eclectic rendition of old and new, a reflection of the estate’s diverse cultural heritage and progressive approach to winemaking. If you can’t make it get your hands on Plaisir de Merle’s Petit Plaisir 2014. This predominant Shiraz red blend is magic, for just over R100.
