I should have stuck with cows, instead of Bulls

-

I have been having good fun recording our Super Rugby betting podcast each week. On the show, I speak to a guest and we take a look at the weekend’s fixtures from a betting perspective.

Last week, I had Chris from Goodforthegame on the show and we set about trying to find a few winners. When we got to the Bulls’ game away at the Sunwolves on Saturday morning, we could both share stories of how the Bulls had cost us a lot of cash this season already. When I asked him how he would be structuring his bets, he set off on a tangent and started describing the working farm he was taking his family to for a weekend break.

Chris had come to the conclusion that the only way not to lose money on the Bulls was not to bet on them and he was plan- ning to be on his knees in a barn milking a cow come kickoff time. This seemed a bit extreme for my liking and I confirmed that I would be giving the Bulls another chance. Surely, they could put the Sunwolves away?

I ended up getting heavily involved in the game, including going high on Bulls points and backing them to beat the 15-point handicap. The first indications that I was not going to enjoy the game were the drizzly conditions. The second was the heavy South African accent of ex-Bulls coach Frans Ludeke who, being based in Japan, had somehow found his way into the commentary box.

It was insightful to hear his commentary; he was raving about the Bulls' attacking play, even when they were unable to create scoring chances against a team that shipped 80 points at home against the Hurricanes.

When the Bulls hit the front with 10 minutes to go, he said they should not defend the lead, but then kept on referring to the Bulls being happy the clock was running down.

Needless to say, I took a massive hit on the game and as the Sunwolves celebrated a famous win, I found myself thinking that joining Chris for a cow-milking session would not have been such a bad idea after all. It would certainly have saved me some money.
