Extreme Festival at Kyalami

KICKING OFF: BIGGEST DRAWCARD IS TWO RACES FOR G&H TRANSPORT EXTREME SUPERCARS

Toby Venter will be regarded as this weekend’s victory favourite.

The Kyalami circuit will start its 2017 motorsport activities in style this weekend, with the Extreme Festival travelling show playing a major role in the venue’s Motorsport Festival on Friday and Saturday.

The biggest crowd drawcard should be two races for G&H Transport Extreme Supercars, with more than 30 of the country’s fastest four-wheelers taking to the tarmac. Topping the entry list will be Kyalami’s current overall lap record holder Toby Venter in his Porsche 911 GTR. Venter won in the car at Kyalami the last time out, and he will be regarded as this weekend’s victory favourite.

He will face serious opposition in Simon Murray (Aeronautic­a Lamborghin­i Gallardo), Franco Scribante ((Porsche 997 Turbo), Johan Engelbrech­t (Jogajoga Porsche 997 Turbo), Jonathan Shenkman (Stradale Lamborghin­i Gallardo), Marcel Angel (Autohaus Ferrari 458), Jonathan du Toit (TAR Ferrari 430), Jason Campos (Campos Transport BMW M3 GT) and Craig Jarvis (Panacea Ferrari 430). Others who should be at the front are Dawie Olivier (G&H Transport BMW M3), Kishoor Pitamber (Siris Engineerin­g BMW 335i Turbo), Mark du Toit (TAR Ferrari 360), Greg Parton (Drizit Lamborghin­i Gallardo) and Franco di Matteo Deltec Alfa Romeo GT).

Officially, the day’s premier races will be for Sasol Global Touring Cars. The man to beat should be current champion Michael Stephen in his Engen Xtreme Audi A3. Chasing him should be Gennaro Bonafede (Sasol BMW), Simon Moss (Engen Xtreme Audi A3), Mathew Hodges (Volkswagen Jetta), Johan Fourie (EPS Couriers BMW), Robert Wolk (Sasol BMW), Daniel Rowe (Volkswagen Jetta) and Michael van Rooyen (RSC BMW).

The class for GTC2 cars should see Keagan Masters (VW Golf GTI), Mandla Mdakane (VW Golf GTI), Trevor Bland (TB VW Golf GTI), Charl Smalberger (Indy Oil VW Golf GTI), Bradley Liebenberg (Ferodo JCW Mini), Iain Stephenson (Comsol VW Golf) and Christophe­r Shorter (Champion JCW Mini) doing battle.

Devin Robertson (Payen Polo) and Lee Thompson (Alpine Motors Polo) are likely to be the top contenders in the Engen

Volkswagen Cup races, chased by Matt Shorter (Moog Polo), Jeffrey Kruger (Universal Health Polo), Paulus Franken (Manitou Group Polo), Darren Oates (Glasfit Polo), Dewald Brummer (Alpine Motors Polo) and Clinton Bezuidenho­ut (Glyco Engine Polo).

The Samcar V8 Supercar category will field 12 cars, led by Franco di Matteo (Deltec Batteries Jaguar), Ben Morgenrood (Morgenrood Ford Mustang), Mackie Adlem (Adlem Auto Jaguar), Larry Wilford (Ford Falcon), Lonika Maartens (Hoosier Chev Lumina), Terry Wilford (Jaguar) and Benjamin Morgenrood (Morgenrood Ford Mustang). The V8 Masters category will bring another 13 cars to the party, driven by people like Marcel Angel (Autohaus APV), Richard Schreuder (TRS Constructi­on APV), Carl Nel (Cape Eye Laser ARV), Gary Fourie (Ford APV), Brian Evans (Ford APV) and Mike Brookes (Ford APV).

Julian van der Watt (In- vestchem Mygale) is the favourite to win the Investchem Formula 1600 races. He’ll come up against Stuart White (Fantastic Mygale), Brad Benningfie­ld (General Energy Ford), Alex Gillespie (ERP Trucking Myhale), Dean Venter (Nash Mygale) and Paige Lindenberg (First Race Mygale).

Adding nostalgia will be races for the SKF Legends of the 9-Hour sports and saloon cars. A wide variety of entries will include Rui Campos (Lola T70), Jonathan du Toit (TAR Chevron), Thomas Falkiner (Ford Mustang GT), Peter Bailley (Ford GT40), Mark du Toit (Lola T70 Spyder), Ben Morgenrood (Ford Mustang), Keegan Campos (Porsche RSR) and Jeffrey Kruger (TAR Lola T70).

Top runners in the Little Giants class should be Ishmael Baloyi (GSM Dart), Vic Campher (Tom Campher Volvo P1800), Mark van Rooyen (Bay Drive Sunbeam Alpine) and Melanie Spurr (TAR Consul 315).

The National Sports Car Championsh­ip brigade will be led by Brian Algar (Shelby CanAm), Jason Campos (Shelby CanAm), Fritz Kleynhans (Comenius Ligier) and Alister Brown (Shelby CanAm).
