Downs move up to second with two games in hand as Chiefs hit a snag.

Anight of drama marked by unbelievable goals and misses may just be the best way to describe last night’s Absa Premiership action which left some with diminished hopes and others with joyful grins.

An incredible 17 goals were scored in the six matches played at various venues as teams at the top jostled while those at the bottom scrambled for safety.

It was however at Cape Town Stadium where the most drama unfolded as Kaizer Chiefs became the night’s biggest losers although the score margin in their match against Cape Town City was a close 3-2.

The defeat stalled Steve Komphela’s chase for the only title still available to them this season.

City, meanwhile, took another step towards rewriting the history books in local football as they continue their stride to- wards snatching the Premiership title and adding it to the Telkom Knockout Cup which they have already won – all in their first season.

Eric Tnkler’s team opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Aubrey Ngoma raced through the Amakhosi defence, and easily slotted past Bruce Bvuma who was making his debut in goal in the absence of the injured Itumeleng Khune.

Their lead was cut short as Siphiwe Tshabalala equalised with an equally beautiful chip over Shua-ib Walters before Lebogang Manyama put City ahead with 15 minutes until the break. Joseph Molangoane equalised again for the Glamour Boys, but Judas Moseanedi had the last say as he scored right at the death to hand City the three points.

City remain top but are just two points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns who have two games on hand.

Elsewhere, Sundowns cruised to a 2-0 win over Ajax Cape Town in Pretoria make a massive two places jump to second.

The usual suspects, Percy Tau and Themba Zwane, were on the scoresheet again as Pitso Mosimane’s team put pressure on the leaders, winning their fourth match in a row.

SuperSport United also returned to the title race after recording a 1-0 win over Bidvest Wits courtesy of Thuso Phala’s second half strike.

In the battle for survival, Bloemfontein Celtic let slip of a golden chance to move clear of danger when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Highlands Park .
