ROUTINE: PUSH YOUR COMFORT ZONE TO THE LIMITS

-

One of the most common reoccurring sentences people utter is that they have a lack of time. Lack of time to do the things that they know are important, but just can’t seem to manage in their schedule. I must ask you this, do you have time to shower and brush your teeth? Do you have time to take your kids to school and do you have time to take them to the doctor or hospital if there is an emergency?

The reason you have time for these things and others listed above is because they are important and come hell or high water, you will make time. It is important socially and hygienically to be clean and have minty, fresh breath. It is important that your children get a good education so they can grow up to be successful and the last thing you want is for your loved ones to be ill or be admitted to hospital because you did nothing when all the signs were there.

Why would you make time for these important things yet fail to make time for other important things? Could it be that because there is no life-threatening occurrence associated with your task, thus allowing you to put it on the back burner? Could you be a master procrastinator?

Mel Robbin, author of the 5 Second Rule believes that there are two types of procrastination, one in which you put off a task, simply to avoid stress, the other when you put off a task which is not time sensitive so that you can brew new creative life into your idea or task.

It is quite interesting and makes perfect sense according to Freud’s Pleasure Principle. He believes all humans are instantly in a state of pursuing pleasure and avoiding pain. Tasks cause stress; you avoid stress by delaying the task. The bigger the task with a long time gap to complete, the longer you will delay in getting it completed. When it comes to athletes in pursuit of excellence, you should live by a framework of success. This means that everything you do on a daily basis is working towards conquering your goal. You have one-and-a-half to two hours before the day officially starts. Everyone’s daily routine is different and hectic, but it follows some form of routine. You need to sit down, start your day earlier and fit what you need to do to get ahead in. Master time and make it your slave otherwise it is going to make it yours. I keep advocating to my athletes, if you want to be ordinary, simple pitch up at practice and do exactly what everyone else is doing. However, if you want to be extraordinary, then you need to consistently push your comfort zones and do the things that you most fear doing. Look out for next week’s article where I share with you the 5 Second Rule which is cognitively going to be a game changer and it is as simple as 5-4-3-2-1 … succeed!
