One of the biggest mysteries remains over why flyhalf Elton Jantjies (right) is such a Super Rugby match-winner with the Lions, but hasn’t yet taken that form into Test match rugby.

Jantjies was again in top form, scoring the Lions’ crucial third try last weekend against the Force and he was set to play yet another crucial role this morning against the Rebels in Melbourne.

Lions coach Johan Ackermann said the 26-year-old Jantjies, who has played 11 Tests, has matured immensely and is worth his weight in gold to them.

“I think he always had that calmness despite the general opinion that there’s a question mark over him in the big games,” said Ackermann.

“We don’t have that doubt with him. We know he is a match-winner and gives us his best. He has grown the last few years as a player and as a leader in the side and decision-maker.”

Ackermann agreed there’s always something to work on, saying one can always do something better.

“Whether it’s a better kick to touch or a tactical one, if there’s one thing Elton is not lacking it is to do the extras,” he said.

“He does the hard training and he is also the one who stays behind long after training for extra kicking exercise.”

After six years in Super Rugby, Jantjies is starting to show the experience and maturity.

“We are pleased with how the season has gone and there were a few games where Elton’s kicking was of cardinal importance to keep us ahead and to keep pressure on the opposition,” he said.

“And I am just happy that he is reaping the rewards on the field, obviously one has to give credit to the forwards for providing him with the basis.

“But when it comes to his individual responsibility he puts in the hard yards.”
