Chiefs’ Paez on goals hunt

If there is anything that Kaizer Chiefs have done right this season, it was to sign Gustavo Paez (above) who has surprised many and become an instant hit at the embattled Soweto giants.

Paez’s signing was, however, met with some disgruntlement as his scoring record didn’t inspire any confidence. But the 27-yearold has shown he is an intelligent striker whose easily deceives his markers with quick runs on their blind spots. His passing is also good and his eye for goal is no longer under doubt, having scored four times – three in the Nedbank Cup and once in the Absa Premiership.

Komphela will be hoping the striker can get to add to the league goal he has already scored when they host Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium this evening.

Arrows have previously given Amakhosi a good run for their money, and with their position in the top eight not guaranteed as yet, Clinton Larsen’s team will look to cause an upset.

The Venezuelan forward said it was difficult when he joined the team, having to compete with eight other strikers for a starting berth. Making matters worse for him, he joined just as veteran attacker Bernard Parker found his scoring form in Steve Komphela’s team.

“It was difficult because there were eight or nine strikers when I arrived here. We were all fighting for a place in the starting 11,” he said.

A huge cloud hangs over Amakhosi as the possibility of finishing the season without adding anything to the team’s illustrious cup collection becomes bigger with every match.
