Wing Mvovo now a fullback

- Ken Borland

Sharks coach Robert du Preez has chosen to use Springbok wing Lwazi Mvovo (above) at fullback and Garth April at flyhalf, while a hamstring injury to Michael Claassens has forced the return of Cobus Reinach as the starting scrumhalf for their Super Rugby match against the Sunwolves in Singapore tomorrow.

Following the injuries to Rhyno Smith and Pat Lambie, there had been speculation that Du Preez would play April at fullback and give Benhard Janse van Rensburg another opportunity at flyhalf, but he has backed Mvovo in the last line of defence, the 30-yearold having played in the Sharks’ No 15 jersey before. April has also done well at flyhalf this season when covering for the absence of Lambie and Curwin Bosch.

In all, there are nine changes to the starting line-up that was shaded by the resurgent Kings last weekend, and four more on the bench, including a potential debut for Rowan Gouws, the scrumhalf who was flown over as emergency cover.

Johan Deysel replaces last year’s injured SA Under-20 captain Jeremy Ward at inside centre, while comparisons between the impact made at loosehead prop by Thomas du Toit and Tendai Mtawarira will continue to be made as the young gun starts this week and the veteran Springbok is on the bench.

Rising star S’busiso Nkosi replaces Mvovo on the wing, while rotational changes see lock Stephan Lewies, tighthead prop Lourens Adriaanse and hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle back in the starting line-up.
