Tears flow for Karabo
WE’LL NEVER FORGET YOU: SISTER’S ANGUISH
‘Evil prevails when good men do nothing,’ says friend of woman, 22, who was killed and burnt.
One of Karabo Mokoena’s church cell group members yesterday told mourners that evil prevails when good men do nothing. Mokoena, 22, allegedly suffered abuse at the hands of her boyfriend, Sandile Mantsoe, who is accused of murdering her and burning her body beyond recognition.
Yesterday, she was laid to rest at the West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg.
Founder of Kings and Queens Cell Group Linda Makhanya said: “Evil prevails when good men do nothing. It’s time for change, time to build, instead of destroying.
“Karabo had so many convictions. She told me one night when we spoke about some of these issues that ‘I’m going to speak and convince people that the Bible is the most powerful book in the world’.”
He said Mokoena believed that in life there were no natural God-made failures.
During the burial ceremony, the heartbreaking speech of Mokoena’s elder sister, Bontle Mokoena, left the congregants in tears.
“This is the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life,” said Bontle before reading a heartfelt letter her sister had written to her parents in 2015.
The letter included how grateful Mokoena was to have both her parents. She also mentioned in the letter that her father was a great man, who had set a great example to his children.
Not able to hold back her tears, Bontle at times struggled to speak when thanking her parents for giving her a sister like Karabo.
“Karabo was bold and she always told me to stand tall. We will never forget you. You have left a hole in my heart and I thank my parents for bringing you into life. I love you with all my heart. When I look at this coffin it’s hard to believe that it’s you in there,” Bontle shared.
Minister of Social Development and leader of the ANC Women’s League Bathabile Dlamini, along with Susan Shabangu, Minister of Women in the Presidency, were among those who attended Mokoena’s funeral.
They condemned any and all forms of violence against women and children. –
