Domeyer set for a double

- Patrick Nkosi

A couple of months ago when the Candice Bass-Robinson yard announced Aldo Domeyer would be their new stable jockey the news was met with rather mixed reviews.

I don’t think anybody would have predicted the level of success this partnership has had so far. It honestly feels like not a single Cape Town meeting concludes without them scoring a win or two.

The trainer-jockey combination could make for the best double to take on tomorrow and interestingly enough, both runners compete in the two feature races on the card.

Domeyer is aboard Magical Wonderland in the first feature, the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery over 1200m. A two-year-old daughter of What A Winter, she is yet to taste defeat. She holds two of the other five runners in this event on form (Nanna Anna and Too Phat To Fly) having beaten them easily.

That run was particularly impressive considering it came after a three-month rest. She’ll come into this in fine fettle and should only get better. She relished the 1200m distance and is unlikely to lose from a No 3 draw and at level weights with the field at 60kg.

Candice sends out Dutch Philip in the main race, the Cape Of Good Hope Nursery (Grade 3). This twoyear-old son of What A Winter is in pursuit of a hat-trick of wins and could prove one of the best bets on the card. He has a wide draw but this shouldn’t raise too many red flags.

This colt has holds Speedpoint and Zodiac Jack on form having outrun them before. Speedpoint could prove the biggest danger – my only concern is fact he didn’t do so well over 1200m in his debut run. He’s improved with each race, the big question is, is this improvement enough to beat Dutch Philip? I don’t think so.
