Indoor plants are new decor trend

SYNERGY: AND GREEN IS THIS YEAR’S INDOOR COLOUR

- Alice Spenser-Higgs

Put them within two square metres of where you sleep for air purification.

Green is this year’s indoor décor colour. Being the colour of nature, it is calming yet also signifies life and growth.

It is almost impossible to go wrong when using green because it harmonises with everything and the most natural way to incorporate green into a room is with indoor foliage plants.

Indoor plants are the hot new décor trend. Besides their obvious attributes, indoor plants are finding favour for their ability to clean and purify the air.

Some are more effective than others, like Spathiphyllum (peace lily) bromeliads, dracaena, and bird’s nest fern (Asplenium) that absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants in the home.

With the economy dictating that we tighten our belts and reduce the budget, indoor foliage plants are an affordable option.

They just keep on going with the minimum of care and are easy to move around, when one feels like a change of style or mood.

The simplest tip is to go for height and fullness.

If a mature plant is beyond your budget, start with a smaller one and display it on a shelf, on a bar stood or a side table or suspend it from the ceiling as a hanging basket.

Good to know: to get the full air-purifying benefits of indoor plants, place them within your breathing zone, which is about two square metres around where you normally sit or sleep.
