LOCK, STOCK AND WINE BARREL

- Adriaan Roets adriaanr@citizen.co.za

As South Africa’s premier wine awards, the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, is not only a good indication of what’s going on in the wine industry, it really creates a frisson of excitement for consumers because wines from all ends of the spectrum are presented and explicated.

If you ever wanted an introduction to wine collecting, easy drinking or just background on all the estates and winemakers of South Africa, this show is not to be missed.

This year, 960 wines from 198 producers were entered for the judges’ deliberation.

So the award winners truly did outshine their many competitors and the numbers involved add that little extra allure to every winner.

Leading the pack this year is Tokara Wine Estate, which was named the most successful producer at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show for a second time since the championship’s inception.

The judges came to their conclusion after Tokara bagged five awards for its Director’s Reserve White 2015, the Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2015, the Reserve Collection Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest 2016, the Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Syrah 2013 and the Director’s Reserve Red 2013.

The show app details the results of the show by medal, category and producers, as well as the seal code numbers of all trophy, gold and silver medals.

The app has links to buying the winning wines via makro.co.za and tickets to the public tastings.

Tastings are on Friday at the Sandton Convention Centre (5pm-9pm). You can also get tickets through Computicket.
