QUEEN OF FRAGRANCE: LIZ FERRETT’S EXPERT ADVICE ON FRAGRANCES

- Kgosi Modisane

Queen of scents and smells Liz Ferrett shares her expert opinion and tips on which notes to pick during this cold, harsh season.

Just like you change your wardrobe in winter, one should consider switching fragrances too.

We wear darker, richer, deeper colours and textured clothing. Women also wear deeper colour lipsticks and nail polish during the cold season. Fragrance is very personal. Think about the colour of autumn leaves and how they are stronger than summer scents.

Wear an Eau de Parfum which has a higher concentration than an Eau de Toilette and many fragrance houses have intense versions.

Layer your scent by using body lotion in winter when the skin is dry before using your fragrance as dry skin does not hold fragrance as long as moisturised skin.

It’s important to consider wearing fragrances that are warm, richer, sensual bold scents with heavier base notes that suits the cooler weather. Wear fragrances that are woody, oriental, exotic spicy, heavy florals and orientals. Consider fragrances that have sandalwood, cedar, patchouli, musk, amber, vanilla, oriental resins, sumptuous flowers, jasmine, lavender, Iris, Rose and tuberose. Leather and tobacco scents are great in men’s fragrances this time of year. These are some of my alltime favourite fragrances to wear in winter:

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Floral Shock EDP. A fruit floriental fragrance

This fragrance hits like a jolt of espresso coffee with bold citrus notes. It’s new, different and I find it irresistibly sensual. I think of hot black coffee with bold citrus notes together with mysterious note of white amber. I love to wear this scent in the evening and always receive compliments.

Hugo Boss the scent for her EDP. A floral, fruity, gourmand fragrance

It’s elegant, warm and seductive with a potent combination of ingredients. It opens with velvety peach freesia that dries down like a gourmand scent. The fragrance opens quite light but the dry down of coc o a deepens and has the characteristic of a gourmand fragrance. I like to wear this fragrance on a sunny winter day because it lingers for long. It’s truly beautiful.

Montblanc Lady Emblem Elixir EDP. A floral woody fragrance

I can only describe this scent as a magic potion, it’s elegant yet delicate and radiant.
