This time the objection goes Weiho's way

There is an old expression that what goes around, comes around.

Those words came back to bite the Snaith stable at Greyville on Saturday when Lonsdale Stirrup Cup winner Captain Splendid lost the Grade 3 SABC Gold Vase in the stewards room to Weiho Marwing-trained Hermoso Mundo.

In the 2014 Vodacom Durban July Marwing-trained Wylie Hall crossed the line in first place with Legislate, trained by Snaith, in second. The long hooter sounded, the stipendiary stewards objected, and went on to uphold it, giving Legislate the race.

Once again it was the stipes who objected and it took just a few minutes for the result to be reversed.

Hermosa Mundo went off TAB favourite and was ridden by Karl Zechner while Piere Strydom was aboard Captain Splendid. Banner Hill made the pace in this 3000m event with Captain Splendid moving up into second shortly before the field turned for home.

Once in the straight Captain Splendid hit the front while Hermoso Mundo started to make his challenge up the centre of the course. Zechner’s mount looked as if he would sweep into the lead but Captain Splendid did not give up the fight. Unfortunately, in doing so, he ducked out and made contact with Hermoso Mundo.

The two went to the line with just a short head between them and when the long hooter sounded and the objection announced, the outcome was a mere formality.
