Marwing’s charge looks for ‘stayers Triple Crown’

-

Highveld trainer Weiho Marwing will bid to win the unofficial “stayers’ triple crown” when he saddles four-year-old Ideal World gelding Hermoso Mundo in the R1.25-million, eLan Gold Cup over 3200m at Greyville in Durban on Sunday.

The gelding has won the 3200m Gold Bowl at Turffontein and the Grade 3 SABC Gold Vase over 3000m at Greyville in his last two starts and will confirm his status as the country’s champion stayer if he can lift this Grade 3 title on the second day of the Gold Cup Festival Of Racing.

Marwing has shown he is one of the best conditioners of long-distance runners and with brother Weichong in the saddle, Hermoso Mundo has a good chance of completing the treble.

But it may not be that easy as he will meet four-year-old Captain Al gelding Captain Splendid, who was demoted after winning the Gold Vase following an objection. Piere Strydom, a master at judging pace, retains the ride on Captain Splendid and this time his mount will be 2kg better off with Marwing’s charge.

But both could be upstaged by Mike de Kock-trained Australianbred gelding Kinaan. The son of Galileo finished a 1.55-length third in the Gold Vase and will carry just 52.5kg. Callan Murray, back from a stint in Hong Kong, is in the irons.

Two Grade 1 juvenile races are also to be run on the day, the Premiers Champion Stakes and Thekwini Stakes, both over 1600m with prize money of R750,000.

A tribute to South African breeders is that only one of the 31 horses carded for the two races this year was not bred in this country. Champion trainer Sean Tarry holds a strong hand in both races. In the Champion Stakes he saddles three runners, including the winner and third-placed horses of the Golden Horseshoe – Purple Diamond and Captain And Master – with Warrior’s Rest completing the team.

However, as strong as the Tarry team appears to be, they could be upstaged on this occasion by the Joey Ramsden-trained Oratorio colt Ancestry who was just a head behind Purple Diamond at the line. Tarry saddles Mambo In Seattle filly Desert Rhythm, winner of the Golden Slipper, who will try to complete the double by winning the Thekwini Stakes.

Let It Flow, who ran a onelength second to her that day, is not in the race with her closest rival from that encounter, stable companion Rockin Russian, having to make up two lengths to turn the tables. - Gold Circle
