No police officers were injured in the incident.

Fairland police opened fire yesterday on two of four suspects who allegedly pulled weapons on them when trying to flee in a car along Beyers Naude Drive in Cresta.

According to Captain Walter Spencer of Linden police station, officers from Fairland noticed a suspicious VW Polo on the road while driving and when they switched their sirens on, two of the four occupants left the vehicle and made a run for it but were apprehended.

They ran between a car dealership and Cresta shopping centre, while the other two suspects made a stand and allegedly pointed firearms at the officers. The officers opened fire on the two, wounding one man in the leg. The other was tackled to the ground and sustained a head injury.

“Both will be taken to hospital but they will face charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms, pointing of a firearm in public and possibly being in possession of suspicious property (the vehicle),” Spencer said.

It is unclear what charges the other two suspects would face.

Constable Moloko Kgatla, spokesperson for Fairland police station, said none of the officers involved in the shooting were injured.

While the incident took place near Cresta shopping centre, Elena Yiallouris, Cresta marketing manager, confirmed it did not take place on its premises. However, Spencer added that security personnel assisted police in catching two of the suspects. – Caxton News Service
