An advocate has been appointed to head the investigation into the events which lead to the deaths of two supporters and the injury of many others during last weekend’s Carling Cup match at FNB Stadium.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced yesterday afternoon that Advocate Vincent Maleka SC will oversee the process and urged all the stakeholders to provide assistance to ensure a quick investigation.

Vusumuzi Prince Chauke, 30, and Johannes Nkosi, 33, died during a stampede at FNB Stadium as fans with fake tickets allegedly pushed open a gate to gain entry into the arena where Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs clashed.

“The League, affected clubs, service providers, sponsors, supporters, the South African Police Service and all other role players will provide all possible assistance to enable Advocate Maleka to perform his tasks. The League will ensure the matter is dealt with expeditiously and properly,” read part of the statement from the PSL.

Pirates and Chiefs bosses announced on Monday they would ask for the PSL to take over the investigation and asked that no one be apportioned blame before all the facts have been gathered. The investigation is expected to take 14 days.

The friendly match attracted 90 000 spectators.
