Meet Snowy, the girl’s Golf

PEARLY WHITE COMFORT: ECONOMICAL ON PETROL, BIG ON SPACE AND A LITTLE FUTURISTIC

- Thami Kwazi

VW’s latest 1.0 TSI offering won my lady’s heart – and gave me some street cred.

Iknow nothing about cars. I’m just happy when the tank is full and when it moves. Seriously, it just seems like too much admin to concern myself with the functionality of an automobile.

So when the keys to the latest Golf 1.0 TSI landed on my desk and I was told I’d be testing it for a week, the first thing that had me excited was the prospect of a full tank. In an economy where fuel is costly and traffic busy, any mode of transport that saves you a few pennies is worth celebrating.

So my temporary drive-about was white in colour, and I immediately christened her Snowy.

I am not going to apologise for that.

A lot of people give their cars names and this one just suited the white pearl paint job.

The fantastic thing about the TSI is that it not only looks great but it’s a really comfortable drive.

I’ve never really been keen on VWs, as I view them as more a men’s than women’s car. I mean we’ve all seen the TV ads that always show some funky guy zipping round the city, living life to the fullest.

I can attest to the car making you believe you’re living your best life to the fullest... it’s comfort levels lead you to believe you’re floating on a cloud as opposed to swerving on tar.

The six-speed gear shift is soft and not like my everyday car, which tends to feel like the gears of a 25-ton truck.

My two favourite features on Snowy have to be the ignition switch-off at every robot stop as you gear into neutral, which is such a petrol saver.

They call it stop-stop-start, and can be deactivated if one finds it irritating.

And, her small press-down handbrake – there’s something futurist about not having to pull up a handbrake. The pedals were designed to look sporty and they do resemble a race car.

Turning on the radio was easy with a LED screen – awesome for i-phone users, as it uses the i-connect system, but even with my average android I could just swipe for USB, to change the radio station or play my music via bluetooth and safely receive calls without having to touch my phone.

Everywhere I took Snowy, people gawked and told me my car was a stunner. Snowy’s exterior is sporty and fresh with sexy exhaust pipes that compliment her body.

Another well-needed feature of the car is plenty of boot space... this may not be important to everybody.

But in my case, I’m the type of girl who loads her car up with two pairs of heels, coats for all types of weather, a small blanket and a make-up bag.

Now this is all before I have to fit groceries in there. Even though I’m not the guy in the ad, Snowy did make me feel funky and cool.

This is definitely a car I would look into purchasing.

My only gripe would be she’s not as fast as I’m used to. I do tend to have a heavy foot, but her take-off at robots was sufficient to make me smile.

For a few days, Snowy gave me the street cred that I have always needed.
