‘Peter Pan’ Brits a legend at Saracens
– Saracens boss Mark McCall has hailed the age-defying performances of evergreen former Springbok and Stormers star Schalk Brits.
At 36, Brits (right) is one of the older players to still be plying his trade in a competition as challenging as the English Premiership, but McCall has hinted that he’d love to see the stalwart delay his impending retirement.
Brits provided an assisting hand in a number of tries in their 55-24 rout of Northampton at the weekend, while he also added a five-pointer of his own to once again send out a reminder that age is just a number.
Brits’ enduring influence understandably prompted McCall to hint he may try to tempt the
London
“Peter Pan” player to extend his incredible career.
“That (retiring) is a decision he has made; he will be 37 next year … so we will see,” McCall commented. “He’s Peter Pan. He’s an explosive athlete and his athleticism hasn’t gone away at all.
“His body is sore after games, but it was a stunning performance (against Northampton). This is his ninth season at the club and he’s been a star from day one. He’s a phenomenal player and hopefully we can give him a really good send-off this year.”
Brits can consider himself extremely unlucky to have only featured in 10 Tests for the Boks, but he has become a legendary figure at Saracens, where he has featured in over 100 games. – ANA
