Bookweek extra

-

During National Book Week, South Africa celebrates literature and literacy – but it doesn’t mean only new titles and freshly pressed pages need your attention. South Africans know a thing or two about pre-loved books and is home to fantastic stores sharing the gospel of reading – only these books are remarkably more affordable.

Here are three second-hand book shops you need to visit at least once.

1. Collector’s Treasury

Probably one of the biggest second-hand book shops you will visit (it’s considered the largest in the southern hemisphere), Collector’s Treasury consists of six floors with books, vinyl records and antiques. You have your groundwork cut out for you as books aren’t necessarily categorised and you need to delve deep to dig out impressive, albeit dusty, treasures. Collector’s Treasury is situated at CTP House, 244 Commissioner street, Johannesburg. For more information call 011-334-6556.

2. Kalk Bay Books

Love Cape Town? Well, you’ll love the village charms of Kalk Bay even more once you step inside the local book store. Offering a section with relatively mint condition second-hand books, there’s also a spot for children to unwind and get lost in literature as they page through their new books.
