Scott: Cup matches are a great leveller

MIDFIELD STAR: IT DOESN’T MATTER WHERE THEY’RE PLAYED

Wits have had some problems in centre of defence.

Bidvest Wits midfielder Granwald Scott reckons playing at home against Cape Town City in the second leg of the semifinal of the MTN8 on Sunday won’t give his side a major advantage, as the Clever Boys look to overturn a 1-0 deficit.

Scott believes Benni McCarthy’s side will have the same mentality that has already seen them beat the Clever Boys twice this season. City won 1-0 at Bidvest Stadium in an Absa Premiership tie on August 18 and then beat them 1-0 again on August 27 in Cape Town in the first leg.

“It doesn’t matter where you play when it is a cup game. We just need that hunger to get to the next level. I think it’s going to be more of the same game we played against them already in the league as well as the cup game. They will come here kick us and obviously we need to be much better than we were the last time,” said the Wits midfielder.

Scott missed out on Wits’ MTN8 triumph last season, joining the club in January as he helped them kick on to the Premiership title. The 29-year-old midfielder says Wits will need to be more lethal up front and utilise their chances to make sure they go through to the final again.

“We need to take our opportunities this time around because it’s the second leg of the semifinal, a great opportunity for us to go through to the final again and keep the cup here at Bidvest Wits,” said Scott.

The former Ajax Cape Town player also said they haven’t really got their combinations going well, particularly at centreback. But he believes it will soon come right.

“It has just been minor setbacks with a couple of changes – Bongani Khumalo came in, Slavko Damjanovic came in and Bongani was out. Things like that are a bit of an issue. But it is still early days and we have a few games to play so we can find the right combinations.”
