WEIGHTS: MAGNER’S CHARGE NOW 2.5KG BETTER OFF WITH CATHEDRAL COUNTY

- Jack Milner

Carmalita in Race 3 looks to be a banker in all bets.

Trainer Roy Magner might have pulled off a very shrewd move by engaging apprentice Mpumelelo Mjoka to ride All Night Flight in Race 7 at Turffontein tomorrow, a MR 80 Handicap over 1000m.

This five-year-old son of Noordhoek Flyer is likely to go off at a decent price as Cathedral County will have plenty of supporters. Last time they met All Night Flight finished a 0.50-length second behind Cathedral County, and while the winner was penalised four points, All Night Flight was penalised two points.

That alone makes Magner’s charge 1kg better off but with the additional 1.5kg allowance claimed by Mjoka, this puts All Night Flight with a very realistic chance of turning the tables.

“He’s always thereabouts but every time he runs a place he gets more and more weight. He is only a three-time winner and has a merit rating of 87,” said Magner.

“Mjoka is a very nice young rider and he is worth his claim. With the extra 1.5kg allowance I’m hoping it will make all the difference.”

The last time the pair met on the Inside track which is around the turn but this time they will be running up the straight on the Standside track. “It won’t make a difference. He is equally suited to both tracks. But he does have a very short run in so the youngster will have to hold him up as long as possible.”

All Night Flight is very much the form horse but what does look a standout bet in the race is the Swinger. It is hard to see both running out of the first three and a visit to your local TAB could be most lucrative.

A Quartet also looks a strong bet, floating those two with Magic, Moshav and Fidelio. The cost is just R72 and it should yield a decent profit.

Those looking to take a Pick 6 will be searching for banker and need look no further than Carmalita in Race 3. There was a lot of talk for this Australian-bred filly on debut and she was touched off by Mohallela, a 6-10 shot from the Mike de Kock yard who was having her second run.

The winner was beaten last Thursday at Turffontein but was only 2.25 lengths off dead-heaters Mrs O and Shivering Sea in a strong race so Carmalita looks hard to oppose and looks to be a banker in all bets.

She looks to have all the raced opposition stone cold and should a first-timer prove too good you will still be in the Pick 6.
